Purpose Of The Role

To deliver high‑quality teaching and learning in Humanities (e.g. History, Geography, PSHE and Citizenship), lead the development of the Humanities curriculum (including PSHE and Citizenship) across the school, and act as a form tutor, supporting the academic, social, and emotional development of a tutor group. The role involves working with students with Special Educational Needs, including high‑functioning autism and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning
  • Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons across Humanities, including PSHE and Citizenship, across Key Stages
  • Adapt teaching to meet the diverse needs of learners, including students with SEN
  • Assess, monitor, and track student progress, providing regular feedback
  • Maintain high expectations for behaviour and learning in line with school policy
  • Contribute to curriculum development and enrichment opportunities
Subject Leadership Humanities (including PSHE and Citizenship)
  • Lead and develop the Humanities curriculum, including PSHE and Citizenship, across the school
  • Ensure schemes of work reflect a broad, balanced, and engaging curriculum that supports personal development and life skills
  • Monitor standards of teaching and learning within Humanities and PSHE/Citizenship
  • Support colleagues with planning, resources, and best practice
  • Track pupil progress within the subject area and implement strategies for improvement
  • Ensure PSHE and Citizenship provision supports statutory guidance and the school’s ethos
  • Contribute to whole‑school improvement priorities
Tutor Role
  • Act as a form tutor, taking responsibility for a tutor group
  • Monitor attendance, punctuality, and wellbeing of students
  • Deliver tutor time activities, including PSHE, Citizenship, and personal development
  • Build positive relationships with students, supporting their personal and academic progress
  • Liaise with families regarding student progress, attendance, and wellbeing
Pastoral And Safeguarding Responsibilities
  • Support students’ social, emotional, and mental health needs
  • Follow all safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Work closely with the safeguarding and pastoral teams
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
Wider Professional Duties
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school, including trips, enrichment, and events
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, including support staff and senior leaders
  • Engage in CPD and professional development opportunities

Person Specification (Summary)

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
  • Experience teaching Humanities, with the ability to deliver PSHE and Citizenship
  • Experience or strong interest in working with SEN students (particularly autism and SEMH)
  • Strong behaviour management and relationship‑building skills
  • Ability to lead a subject area and support colleagues
  • Commitment to inclusive education, pupil wellbeing, and personal development
