We are recruiting for a Scientific Officer to join the Transgenic Team within a Biological Resources Unit. This is an on-site, permanent role supporting the day-to-day husbandry, welfare, and breeding colony management of transgenic mice, in line with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. You will play a key role in supporting Project Licence holders and contributing to the effective running of the facility. The role involves working collaboratively within a specialist team and includes participation in a weekend and Bank Holiday rota.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out daily husbandry, care, and welfare observations for animals within the facility, recording and reporting findings accurately.
- Manage transgenic mouse breeding colonies and undertake colony management tasks as requested.
- Act as a responsible licensee for genetically altered animal lines where required.
- Support cryopreservation and rederivation processes.
- Maintain accurate written and electronic records in line with regulatory and institutional requirements.
- Work in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and promote the principles of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement).
- Contribute to the cleaning, upkeep, and environmental monitoring of the facility.
- Participate in weekend and Bank Holiday rotas, including health checks and routine procedures.
About You
- You will hold a HNC in Animal Technology or equivalent qualification.
- Current or previous holder of a Personal Licence under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
- Proven experience of transgenic mouse breeding and colony management.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in record keeping.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- A thorough understanding of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
