We are supporting a leading research institute in Manchester to recruit a Breeding Team Supervisor within their Biological Resources Unit. This is a hands-on leadership role, ideal for someone experienced in mice or rodent breeding who is confident supervising teams and supporting the day-to-day running of a busy facility.
You will be a visible presence on the ground, overseeing operations, managing workloads, and making key decisions as situations arise. Working closely with researchers and internal stakeholders, you will ensure the smooth running of breeding programmes while maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare and compliance.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise the day-to-day running of the transgenic breeding facility and team
- Lead and coordinate workloads, ensuring tasks are delivered efficiently and to a high standard
- Act as a key decision-maker on the floor, resolving operational issues as they arise
- Manage breeding colonies, maintaining accurate records and updating colony management systems
- Carry out hands-on work including animal husbandry and procedural work (e.g. IP injections, dissections)
- Ensure compliance with the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and all welfare standards
- Work collaboratively with researchers, licence holders, and internal teams
- Support continuous improvement and maintain high operational and welfare standards
- Participate in weekend and out-of-hours rotas where required
- Proven experience working with mice/rodent breeding colonies (essential)
- Hands-on experience within a high-volume breeding or transgenic environment
- Previous experience supervising or leading teams in a laboratory or animal facility setting
- Strong decision-making ability and confidence managing day-to-day operations
- Experience carrying out procedures such as injections and dissections
- Current or previous Personal Licence (PIL A & B) UK or EU licence only
- Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise workloads
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail, particularly with record keeping
This is a fully site-based role in Manchester. No sponsorship is available for this position. Due to the nature of this role, you will be required to complete an online Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and occupational health check if successful in this role.
