Overview Teaching Assistant - Complex Needs (Reception) in Selly Oak, supporting two Reception-aged pupils with complex needs on a 1:2 basis. Both pupils have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition. One child is non-verbal, and the other has very limited language. The successful candidate will provide high-level supervision and tailored support, helping the pupils to access learning both within the wider classroom provision and through a bespoke timetable that includes individualised breakout learning opportunities (for example, sessions in the sensory room).
Responsibilities
- Provide consistent, nurturing 1:2 support for two pupils with autism
- Support communication, engagement, and emotional regulation
- Facilitate learning within the classroom and during structured breakout sessions
- Deliver personal care in line with school policies and dignity standards
- Work closely with the class teacher and wider SEND team to deliver personalised support
- Ensure a safe, supportive environment with a high level of supervision
Please note: Neither pupil displays physical or high-risk behaviours, however both require close monitoring and proactive support when dysregulated.
Ideal Candidate
- Experience supporting pupils with autism and complex needs (early years experience desirable)
- Experience or willingness to carry out personal care
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- A genuine commitment to supporting children with SEND
- The ability to adapt and respond to individual needs throughout the day
This role is long-term, with performance reviewed regularly. For the right candidate, there is scope for the role to continue until the end of the academic year.
