Key Responsibilities

  • Daily attendance monitoring: checking electronic registers, identifying gaps/unexplained absences, and ensuring registers are finalised accurately.
  • First day calling: contacting parents/carers immediately when a student is absent without explanation (phone/email/automated systems where applicable).
  • Intervention & strategy: identifying persistent absence and supporting strategies to improve attendance (e.g., meetings, mentoring, targeted support).
  • Policy & escalation: supporting the enforcement of attendance policy, including documentation and liaison with the Local Authority around Penalty Notices for unauthorised absence.
  • Safeguarding: tracing students with unexplained absences and recording concerns in line with safeguarding procedures (e.g., CPOMS where used).
  • Attendance reporting: producing regular attendance data reports for leadership teams.
  • Home visits: may be required depending on the school's procedures and the level of need.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Previous experience in a school setting (attendance/administration/pastoral highly desirable).
  • Confidence speaking with parents/carers and managing sensitive conversations.
  • Strong administrative skills, accuracy with data, and a professional telephone manner.
  • Working knowledge of school MIS systems (e.g., SIMS or Arbor) is highly desirable.
