We are recruiting a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist SEMH educational setting in the Hemel Hempstead and Redbourn area.

This opportunity would suit someone with experience supporting pupils with SEND, behavioural difficulties or social, emotional and mental health needs who can bring consistency, patience and a confident approach to the classroom.

We are looking for someone with a strong character who can remain calm under pressure, establish clear boundaries and build positive, trusting relationships with pupils.

Please note: This is a full-time position only. Candidates must be able to commit to the full working week.

The Role

You will support pupils who may experience difficulties with emotional regulation, behaviour, engagement and accessing education.

Working alongside teachers and other members of the school team, you will help create a structured, safe and supportive environment where pupils can develop confidence, improve their behaviour and engage with learning.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs.
  • Helping manage challenging behaviour using consistent, positive approaches.
  • Establishing clear expectations and maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Building positive relationships with pupils who may struggle to engage with education.
  • Supporting emotional regulation, social development and independence.
  • Encouraging participation in classroom activities and learning.
  • Working collaboratively with teaching staff to implement individual support strategies.
  • Following safeguarding procedures and school behaviour policies.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND, SEMH or behavioural needs.
  • A strong, confident and resilient personality.
  • The ability to remain calm, patient and professional in challenging situations.
  • Confidence managing behaviour and maintaining consistent boundaries.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A fair, supportive and adaptable approach.
  • Reliability, professionalism and a genuine commitment to supporting vulnerable pupils.
  • Full-time availability.
  • Experience in an SEMH school, alternative provision, specialist education or a similar setting would be particularly beneficial.

Why Consider This Role?

Working in SEMH education can be challenging but highly rewarding. You will have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference to pupils who need additional support to overcome barriers to learning and develop positive relationships.
