Long-term roles available now & September 2026. Aspire People are currently recruiting for a bank of experienced Autism Specialist Teaching Assistants to support schools across Rochdale. We have long-term opportunities available immediately and for September 2026 within both mainstream schools and specialist SEN provisions. These roles are ideal for graduates looking to build a long-term career supporting children with Special Educational Needs.

Education Requirements

  • We are particularly interested in candidates with degrees related to SEN and child development, including:
  • Educational Psychology
  • Psychology
  • SEN-related degree subjects
  • All applicants must hold a UK Bachelor's degree.
  • The Role

    As an Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will support children and young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) across a range of educational settings. You will work closely with class teachers, SENCOs, parents, and wider support staff to provide a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment tailored to each student's individual needs.

    You may support students with:

    • PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance)
    • High-functioning autism
    • Non-verbal communication needs
    • Emotional regulation difficulties
    • Sensory and behavioural needs

    The role requires someone who is patient, nurturing, resilient, and genuinely passionate about supporting children with autism to achieve their full potential.

    Responsibilities

    • Supporting students on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
    • Helping students regulate emotions and manage transitions throughout the school day
    • Providing structure, consistency, and routine
    • Understanding individual triggers and adapting support strategies accordingly
    • Supporting communication and social interaction
    • Assisting teachers in creating an inclusive learning environment
    • Working collaboratively with teaching staff, SENCOs, and parents to support student progress

    Ideal Candidate

    • Previous experience working with children with autism – this is essential
    • Experience gained through placements, tutoring, mentoring, school-based roles, care work, or professional SEN experience
    • A strong understanding of autism and individual learning needs
    • The ability to remain calm and supportive in challenging situations
    • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
    • A patient, adaptable, and compassionate approach

    Requirements

    • A UK Bachelor's degree
    • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service
    • References covering the last 2 years
    • Previous experience supporting children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
