An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Dental Therapist with UK GDC Registration (own professional indemnity preferred) to work at a well-established Dental Practice in Maghull, Liverpool. The post holder is required to provide high quality preventive, restorative and therapeutic dental care to both children and adults within the scope of practice defined by the General Dental Council (GDC), under the NHS contract framework. To contribute to the promotion of oral health and maintenance of patient well-being.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Clinical Duties (within GDC scope of practice)
- Undertake oral examinations, record patient histories (including medical histories) and assess clinical findings.
- Carry out preventive treatments:
- Scaling and polishing (professional mechanical plaque removal).
- Application of fluoride varnishes.
- Fissure sealants.
- Oral health education, dietary advice, hygiene instruction.
- Simple restorations (fillings) in deciduous (baby) and permanent teeth within competence.
- Pre-formed crowns (on primary teeth) where trained.
- Extract deciduous teeth.
- Radiography: taking dental x-rays within the certified role.
- Taking impressions for study, appliances or diagnostic purposes.
- Promotion of oral health: advising, motivating, educating patients (individuals & groups) about oral hygiene, prevention of decay, gum disease.
- Participation in or leading community dental health programmes (e.g. school checks, care homes) if the practice covers such services.
- Obtain informed consent; explain treatment options, risks and benefits.
- Ensure patients understand after-care and follow-up.
- Deal sensitively with patients who are anxious, have special needs or require special care.
- Work closely with dentists, dental nurses, hygienists, and other members of the dental team.
- Recognise limits of one's competence, and refer complex or non-routine cases to a dentist.
- Adhere to clinical governance, infection control, radiation protection, health and safety.
- Maintain accurate patient records according to NHS / GDC standards.
- Undertake CPD (continuing professional development) and ensure revalidation / registration with GDC is up to date.
- Application of silver diamine fluoride.
- Under inhalation sedation: supervised or otherwise, according to local policy.
- Domiciliary care (house-bound patients).
Person Specification
- Qualifications & Registration
- Diploma or degree in Dental Therapy, or combined Dental Hygiene & Therapy approved by the GDC.
- Full registration with General Dental Council as a Dental Therapist.
- Evidence of CPD and that clinical competency.
- Clinical experience in restorative, preventive dentistry in children and adults.
- Experience working under NHS regulations, dealing with NHS treatment plans (desirable).
- Experience treating a variety of patient groups (anxious, with special needs, etc.).
- Excellent manual dexterity, precision, attention to detail.
- Strong communication, empathy, patience.
- Ability to work independently, but also as part of a team.
- Good time management, organisational skills.
- Professional conduct, reliability, respect for confidentiality.
Working Conditions & Hours
- Full-time or part-time, often approx. 37.5 hours per week in many settings.
- NHS Agenda for Change banding (often band 5-6 depending on experience and responsibilities).
- Practice environment: dental surgery, treatment rooms, possible community clinics, schools, care homes, domiciliary settings.
- Use of PPE; adherence to infection control and safety protocols.
