An established and fast-paced transport operation is seeking an experienced Transport Planner / Night Supervisor to join its night operation in Lutterworth.

Working within a busy UK trunking network, the successful candidate will play a key role in coordinating the overnight movement of vehicles and trailers between depots and network locations, ensuring trunking schedules are maintained and service levels are consistently achieved.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced transport professional who understands the pressures of a time-critical night trunking operation, is confident managing drivers and vehicles in real time, and can make quick, effective decisions when operational issues arise.

You will work as part of a supportive night team alongside another Planner, an Operations Manager and Customer Service support, taking responsibility for the smooth running of the overnight network.

The Candidate:

  • Previous experience working as a Transport Planner, Night Planner, Transport Supervisor or similar
  • Experience within trunking, distribution, parcel, pallet or network transport operations is highly advantageous
  • Strong understanding of UK trunking and depot-to-depot transport movements
  • Experience planning and managing a fleet within a time-critical transport environment
  • Excellent geographical knowledge of UK road networks
  • Strong understanding of tachograph legislation, drivers' hours and Working Time Directive
  • Confident using transport planning, vehicle tracking and operational systems
  • Ability to monitor multiple vehicle movements and priorities simultaneously
  • Strong decision-making skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills with drivers, depots, customers and operational teams
  • Proactive and operationally minded, with the ability to react quickly to unexpected issues
  • Comfortable working independently during night operations
  • Previous experience within a trunking or network environment is highly advantageous

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning and coordinating the overnight trunking network, ensuring vehicles are correctly allocated to scheduled trunk runs
  • Monitoring trunk departures and arrivals across the network to ensure schedules and service levels are maintained
  • Managing and replanning the operation in real time when vehicles are delayed, unavailable or operational priorities change
  • Maintaining regular communication with drivers throughout the shift, providing instructions, updates and operational support
  • Monitoring vehicle and driver movements across the network and proactively addressing potential delays
  • Managing driver hours and workloads in line with WTD, tachograph and drivers' hours legislation
  • Maximising vehicle utilisation and ensuring available fleet capacity is used effectively
  • Coordinating trailer and vehicle movements between depots and network locations
  • Liaising with other depots, operational teams and customer service to ensure smooth network flow
  • Investigating and resolving operational issues quickly, escalating significant issues where required
  • Ensuring drivers are fully briefed and have the correct information before commencing their trunk runs
  • Maintaining accurate planning and operational records throughout the shift
  • Supporting the wider transport operation to deliver excellent service levels and minimise operational costs
