Overview

In this night-shift Transport Planner role, you oversee a busy night fleet within a general haulage operation to ensure on-time deliveries and high service levels. You will coordinate with a small night team including another planner, the Operations Manager, and Customer Service to keep the operation running smoothly. Your impact comes from efficient routing, driver support, and proactive problem-solving under pressure. This role offers hands-on responsibility in a fast-paced environment with a clear path to influence operational profitability.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and replan the night fleet for general haulage activities
  • Monitor service levels and ensure on-time deliveries
  • Manage driver communications during the shift (delays, route issues, updates)
  • Supervise driver workloads in line with Working Time Directive and driver hours regulations
  • Review routes to maximise fleet utilization and efficiency
  • Provide real-time operational support and adapt to changing priorities
  • Liaise with customers regarding delays, updates, and failed deliveries
  • Escalate tracker or operational issues to management
  • Maintain strong communication across planning, operations, customer service, and drivers
  • Ensure drivers are briefed before the shift
  • Support operational performance and profitability through planning decisions

Key requirements

  • Previous experience as a Transport Planner or Transport Supervisor
  • Strong background in general haulage planning
  • Experience in a fast-paced transport environment
  • Excellent knowledge of UK road networks
  • Strong understanding of tachograph legislation and driver hours compliance
  • Confident using transport planning systems and operational software
  • Ability to multitask, prioritise, and make decisions under pressure
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Operationally minded with quick adaptability
  • Experience with collection and backhaul operations would be advantageous
