Aspinal of London are looking for an experienced Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017 Support Specialist with a minimum of 5 years' hands-on experience in supporting, maintaining, and enhancing NAV environments.
The successful candidate will serve as the first point of contact for NAV-related incidents and service requests, while also taking ownership of system configuration, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
This role requires strong NAV technical knowledge, familiarity with its underlying database (SQL Server), and the ability to work closely with both end-users and developers to resolve issues, streamline processes, and contribute to system enhancements.
This is a hybrid role which will involve attendance at the office in Fernhurst.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1st and 2nd line support for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017 across all functional areas (Finance, Warehousing, Sales, Purchasing, and Inventory).
• Investigate, diagnose, and resolve user issues, including
- Posting errors, dimension conflicts, and general ledger reconciliation issues.
- Sales order, purchase order, and warehouse process failures.
- Permission set and role-based access issues.
- Perform basic
NAV configuration and setup, such as
- Chart of Accounts, posting groups, VAT setup.
- Item categories, inventory costing methods, and warehouse locations.
- User roles, permission sets, and security filters.
- Work directly with the SQL Server back-end to investigate data integrity issues, run queries, and support reporting requirements.
- Maintain and troubleshoot C/AL customisations within NAV 2017 (with a view to exposure to AL in future Business Central upgrades).
- Collaborate with external partners and 3rd line developers on escalated issues and system enhancements.
- Support data migrations, upgrades, and testing during system projects.
- Produce and maintain documentation, including functional specifications, user guides, and knowledge base articles.
- Provide user training and best practice guidance across business teams.
- Technical Skills & Competencies
Required
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics NAV (ideally NAV 2017, but earlier versions acceptable).
- Strong knowledge of core NAV modules: Finance, Sales & Marketing, Purchase, Inventory, and Warehouse.
- Proficiency with C/AL development language for NAV 2017 (basic code review, debugging, and modifications).
- Solid experience with Microsoft SQL Server: writing queries, investigating data issues, and supporting SSRS/Jet/Power BI reporting.
- Good understanding of NAV permissions and security model (roles, permission sets, security filters).
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot NAV-specific errors (posting issues, table locks, item ledger entries, dimension conflicts, etc.).
- Strong documentation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable
- Experience working with Jet Reports, SSRS, or Power BI for NAV reporting.
- Familiarity with integration tools/APIs for connecting NAV to third-party systems (EDI, e Commerce platforms, etc.).
- Exposure to Business Central (AL development) as a future upgrade path.
- ITIL awareness for structured incident and problem management.
- Development Path
While this role is focused on NAV 2017 support and optimisation, the successful candidate will also be supported to expand into:
- Advanced C/AL development and transition to AL for Business Central.
- Specialisation in finance or supply chain modules.
- Involved in NAV upgrade and migration projects.
- Becoming a key subject-matter expert (SME) and internal trainer for Dynamics NAV/BC.
Qualifications
- Degree in IT, Computer Science, Business Systems, or equivalent practical experience.
- Microsoft Dynamics NAV certification (advantageous but not mandatory).
- SQL Server/Database Administration certification (advantageous).
- Experience working on a helpdesk
