The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is seeking to appoint up to three Independent Chairs to support our commitment to compassionate and transparent learning from every death in custody through our Death in Prison Learning, Audit and Review (DIPLAR) process.
As an Independent DIPLAR Chair, you will play a critical leadership role in facilitating these sensitive, complex reviews. Your primary responsibility will be to guide the DIPLAR process, ensuring open, inclusive and trauma-informed dialogue, and helping to identify actionable learning points for improvement.
Working closely with SPS establishments, NHS partners and SPS HQ DIPLAR Caseworkers, you will ensure the DIPLAR process is completed in accordance with national guidance and within set timescales. Your impartiality and professionalism will be key in creating a safe space for reflection, challenge and learning.

- Proven ability to chair complex and emotionally challenging discussions.
- Skilled in facilitating safe, inclusive, and respectful spaces for open dialogue.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities, with attention to detail.
- Experience of delivering similar work within health, social care, or justice environments.
- Awareness of diversity and inclusion as core business principles.
- Political agility and the ability to navigate complex public service environments.
- Commitment to trauma-informed, non-judgmental approaches to learning.
