We are looking for a proactive Research Analyst to support work on measuring the physical stocks and depletion of natural resources in the UK. This role will play a key part in developing future natural capital accounts aligned with international statistical standards.

You will lead early-stage scoping work on data availability, quality, and methodologies for estimating renewable resource stocks with an initial focus on timber and fish.

What you'll do:

  • Identify, collect, and review data from government departments, agencies, research bodies, and charities.
  • Conduct literature reviews of academic and grey sources on natural resource stock estimation.
  • Assess existing data on resource stocks, harvesting rates, and regeneration rates.
  • Identify gaps in current data and evaluate potential methodologies to estimate missing information.
  • Engage with data providers to understand available datasets and potential for future collaboration.
  • Produce clear, concise documentation outlining findings, recommendations, and viable strategies for future measurement work.

What you'll work on:

  • Timber Resource Stocks: Map existing data sources on timber stock levels, harvesting, and regeneration. Explore and evaluate methods for estimating timber stocks where data is limited. Produce a report recommending at least one viable approach for future statistical production.
  • Fish Resource Stocks: Review available fish stock estimates and sustainability assessments for UK waters. Assess reliability of current data and identify challenges in stock estimation. Make initial contact with key organisations to understand the data landscape.

About you:

Essential:

  • Strong desk research skills and ability to assess the quality and limitations of data.
  • Quantitative background (e.g., environmental science, statistics, economics, geography, or similar).
  • Confident communicator with experience engaging stakeholders or external partners.
  • Ability to produce clear, structured written outputs at pace.

Desirable:

  • Background or interest in environmental issues, forestry, fisheries, conservation, or natural capital.
  • Familiarity with international natural capital accounting frameworks.
