Overview
As Principal ML Engineer in ASOS’s Search & Discovery, you steer the technical direction of AI-powered fashion discovery. You shape scalable ML architectures powering personalised recommendations, AI Stylist experiences and advanced search relevance. You work with ML Scientists, software engineers and product managers to translate research into production, mentoring others and elevating engineering standards. This role offers influence across teams and the chance to impact how customers explore fashion at scale.

Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end architecture for ML systems powering personalised fashion experiences (outfit discovery, homepage ranking, AI Stylist).
- Design and evolve large-scale batch and real-time ML systems serving millions of users.
- Drive cross-team architectural decisions for scalability, reliability and maintainability.
- Set long-term direction for recommendation, retrieval and discovery platforms.
- Provide technical leadership on ML, AI and platform investments and evaluate build-versus-buy options.
- Mentor senior engineers and promote engineering excellence across the organisation.
- Lead development of shared ML capabilities and frameworks used across teams.
- Represent engineering in discussions with senior stakeholders and business leaders.
Key requirements
- Extensive experience designing, building and operating large-scale ML systems in production.
- Experience influencing technical architecture across complex engineering ecosystems.
- Product-focused mindset applying ML/AI to customer and business challenges.
- Experience across ML lifecycle: data analysis, feature engineering, model development, deployment, monitoring and improvement.
- Experience building scalable, observable ML services using cloud and distributed infra.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management
- Leadership and mentoring capabilities
- Ability to influence across multiple teams without direct management responsibility
- Deep expertise in ranking/relevance, recommendation systems, deep learning, LLMs, information retrieval, NLP or content understanding
- Proficiency with PyTorch, TensorFlow or similar frameworks
- Strong programming in Python and/or Java/C++
