IWS Cheshire is an Environmental & Waste Management company based in Cheshire, operating a permitted Hazardous Waste Transfer Station. We support a wide range of clients in the safe and environmentally responsible disposal of their hazardous waste.

The Site Chemist role is based at IWS Cheshire, Road Beta, Brooks Lane, Middlewich, Cheshire, CW10 0QF, 40 hours per week, and generally operates on an alternating weekly shift pattern (Early 06:00 to 15:00, Late 09:00 to 18:00).

The basic role of Site Chemist is to conduct acceptance analysis on incoming waste, ensure that wastes are suitably and safely stored on site, and that waste is dispatched from site. At the discretion of the site Management, a Chemist may be asked to specialise in a particular area or activity, such as TFS management and load preparation, kiln load preparation or laboratory analysis.

The Site Chemist will also be responsible for completing Ad-Hoc tasks as required by management and in line with personal competency.

Role & Responsibilities
  • Accepting wastes (hazardous and non-hazardous) on to site as per company procedure IMS6.03 (E) Bookings and Acceptance. This includes packaged waste and bulk tankers, conducting conformance checks and analysis.
  • Raising Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) on incoming waste as per company procedure IMS6.04(E) Waste Non-Conformance as appropriate. This includes liaising with the Commercial Account Managers to resolve the non-conformances.
  • Checking and ensuring the compliant storage of wastes on site as per company procedure IMS6.05(E) Storage and Segregation.
  • Assisting Site Operators in conducting waste handling and packaging as per company procedure IMS6.06(E) Waste Handling and Packaging Processing.
  • Selecting and preparing waste for dispatch from site (both packaged and bulk shipment) as per company procedure IMS6.07(E) Scheduling and Dispatch.

All the above tasks must be completed in accordance with our Integrated Management System, and be conducted in compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Where the Chemist has been asked to specialise, then their activities must be undertaken in line with the relevant IMS procedure and associated instructions detailed in that procedure.

Experience and Qualifications Required

Site Chemist must be at minimum qualified to a HNC in Chemistry (or applicable scientific field). It is desirable that Site Chemist have:

  • Previous hazardous waste management experience (>1 year).
  • An awareness of: HSG 71 - Chemical warehousing, HSG 51 - Storage of flammable liquids in container, Sector Guidance Note S5.06 Guidance for the Recovery and Disposal of Hazardous and Non Hazardous Waste, Guidance on the classification and assessment of waste Technical Guidance WM3 Waste Classification.
  • ADR/CODG awareness training.

It is advantageous that Site Chemists have:

  • First Aid at Work Certificate.
  • ADR Licence.
