Have you spent time wrestling with VMware, oVirt, or another hypervisor and found yourself thinking there has to be a better way? We think so too and we are actively moving there. If you have Kubernetes experience and are excited by the challenge of migrating real production workloads off traditional virtualisation platforms, this role was built for you.

As a Platform and Infrastructure Senior Engineer at ASK4, you will be a key contributor in our Platform and Infrastructure team at a genuinely interesting moment in our infrastructure journey. We are moving our workloads from traditional hypervisor-based environments toward a modern, Kubernetes-native platform and you will play a hands-on part in making that happen safely and well. You will work across virtualisation, cloud, storage, monitoring, networking, and automation, contributing both to the migration effort and to the wider systems that keep ASK4 running for our clients. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract based at our Sheffield office.

What Youll Be Doing

  • Playing a central role in migrating production workloads from hypervisor-based infrastructure (VMware, oVirt) to Kubernetes, using tools such as Talos, Cilium, and rook-ceph.
  • Designing and implementing Kubernetes-native infrastructure that is production-ready, resilient, and maintainable.
  • Contributing to DR and HA planning for services running across the new platform.
  • Improving developer workflows and supporting software delivery and automation initiatives.
  • Mentoring technical colleagues and acting as an escalation point for complex infrastructure issues.
  • Collaborating with other technical staff to produce clear, useful documentation, including runbooks and migration guides.
  • Maintaining system security and contributing to System Acceptance and Compliance policies.
  • Proactively identifying and delivering improvements to ASK4 systems and processes.

What Were Looking For

Kubernetes is at the heart of this role. We are looking for someone who has gone beyond running containers in isolation and has genuine experience managing Kubernetes in production environments ideally including migrations from VMware, oVirt, or similar platforms. On the Kubernetes side, experience with any of the following will be particularly valuable:

  • Kubernetes cluster lifecycle management: building, upgrading, and operating production clusters.
  • Talos Linux as a Kubernetes-native OS.
  • Cilium for container networking and network policy.
  • rook-ceph for cloud-native storage within Kubernetes.
  • BGP networking in a Kubernetes or data centre context.
  • Rancher for cluster management and multi-cluster operations.
  • Migrating workloads from hypervisors (VMware vSphere, oVirt/RHV, or similar) to Kubernetes, including re-platforming stateful services.

Beyond Kubernetes, you will also bring some of the following:

  • Experience as a Systems Administrator (CentOS/RHEL preferred).
  • Ansible and Terraform for infrastructure automation.
  • AWS (EC2, VPC, ALB/NLB, and related services).
  • Victoria Metrics and Logs, Icinga, or similar monitoring and observability tooling.
  • RADIUS.
  • Web servers and load balancers: Apache, Nginx, HAProxy.
  • Splunk and Git.
  • Scripting in shell and Python.

It would be a bonus if you also have experience with CI/CD (GitLab), RPM packaging, databases (PostgreSQL), or systems design.
