About Our Client

We are recruiting on behalf of our client, who is a young engineer living and working in Stevenage. Our client is an electric wheelchair user and his condition is Muscular Dystrophy which affects his mobility and ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. No care experience is needed and all training will be given.

Our client is:

  • Calm, fun-loving and humorous
  • Responsible
  • Interested in aircraft, history and current affairs
  • Hobbies: flying model aircraft, gaming, modelmaking, 3D printing

About the job

One week on one week off live-in Personal Assistant is required to assist our client with day-to-day activities including personal care and basic housekeeping, as well as potentially providing some support at work. This includes assisting with toileting, showering, dressing, preparation of meals, cooking, washing up, keeping the house clean and tidy, and support with various social activities. Assistance with work trips and holidays away from Stevenage will also form part of the role. Due to the nature of the client's job, there may be work trips abroad, so a valid passport is essential for this role. The client rarely requires assistance during the night, although you would need to be available if required.

Mobility

The client uses a powered wheelchair for all his mobility throughout the day. A mobile hoist is used to transfer between his wheelchair, toilet, shower and bed as part of their morning and evening routines. The client's home is carpeted so moving the hoist around does require some degree of physical strength. The client has an adapted vehicle which they drive themselves to and from work, appointments, social events etc. There will be times when the client will use public transport and they will require assistance with this.

Eating and Drinking

Our client can eat and drink independently, however, they require a PA who can prepare each meal for them, wash up, open bottles of water and assist with all their domestic shopping.

Dressing and Personal Hygiene

The client requires assistance with getting dressed and getting them ready for work in the mornings. On weekdays the client wakes up early for their day (approx. 5am) but they are in bed early each night. They also require assistance with showering and use of a mobile hoist to get in and out of the shower. An essential part of the client's day is doing weight-bearing exercises every morning, which they require assistance with.

During the client's work day

The client typically works in the office 2-3 days per week and at home on the other days. The company's offices are around a 10-minute commute from the client's home. When working at home he requires help to set up his laptop and books as well as help throughout the day with activities including toileting and making lunch. When the client works in the office, he requires assistance to pack his bag, set him up in his car and sometimes travel with him to work. During the working day you must be reachable via phone should the client require any further assistance.

Weekends

These will be more fluid than weekdays and the client generally gets up later than during the week. Most of the time the client will be enjoying relaxing following their working week and engaging in their hobbies, as well as meeting up with friends.

Benefits

You will have your own en suite room in the client's home in Stevenage. The shift pattern is one week on one week off, with another PA working on the alternative weeks. Handovers with the other PA usually happen on Tuesdays. A degree of flexibility is valued, as there are occasions where changing handover days may be needed (e.g. to enable trips away). This is a great opportunity to really help make a difference to our client's working life and personal achievements.

About You

You must be able to respect our client's privacy and have an understanding of the need for confidentiality in all areas of your work. You will need to be supportive of our client's personal ambitions, and able to build a strong relationship with him. You will need to:

  • Be open-minded and easy to get along with
  • Be fluent in English
  • Be physically fit, calm, patient and caring
  • Have a good sense of humour
  • Be clean and tidy
  • Have a degree of flexibility (e.g. to cover holidays and sickness)
  • Have a valid passport (essential)
