About the Job
This is an exciting opportunity to support a young university student who is moving away from home for the first time. Our client is keen to become more independent, build their confidence, make new friends and experience everything university has to offer. They are looking for Personal Assistants who will encourage them to get involved in university life while respecting their independence and privacy.
You will support with:
- Personal care, including dressing, bathing, toileting and daily routines
- Preparing meals, shopping, laundry and light household duties
- Supporting the client at university, including attending lectures and seminars, helping with note taking when required, setting up study materials and assisting around campus
- Accompanying the client to football matches, powerchair football training and competitions, cinema trips, restaurants, concerts and other social activities
- Driving the client's wheelchair accessible vehicle to university, appointments, sporting events and other activities, including longer journeys and overnight stays
- Supporting the client to attend regular hospital appointments and manage daily routines
Previous care experience is welcomed but is not essential, as full training in the client's specific support needs will be provided.
About Our Client
Our client has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and uses a powered wheelchair. They require support with most aspects of daily living but are passionate about maintaining their independence. They are looking forward to starting university, making friends and becoming more confident while studying Sociology.
Their interests include:
- Manchester United (season ticket holder with a complimentary PA ticket)
- Playing Powerchair Football for Leeds PFC and competing on the England Talent Pathway
- Formula One and other motorsport
- Gaming
- Going to the cinema and watching the latest films (anything except horror)
- Music including Gorillaz, Bruno Mars and Tame Impala
As written by our client... "I've never had Personal Assistants before, so this is a new experience for me. I'm looking for someone who is caring and will encourage me to get out and do things, as otherwise I'd probably spend too much time in my room. I'm quite shy, so I'd like someone who is confident but not someone who draws lots of attention to us. It's important to me that personal care is carried out discreetly and that my privacy is respected. I'd like someone who I can get along with, have a laugh with and who can become part of my social circle while also understanding that sometimes I'll want to spend time on my own or with friends."
Powerchair Football is a huge part of our client's life and successful applicants will be expected to support them at weekly training sessions, competitions and approximately 15 weekends away each year. They also regularly attend Manchester United matches at Old Trafford and would like their PA to accompany them. They will sometimes go home for the weekend and holidays, so they would also require the help from the PA too.
Our Ideal PA Will Be
- Hold a full clean UK driving licence (Essential)
- Be confident driving a large automatic wheelchair accessible vehicle
- Friendly, patient and reliable
- Respectful of privacy and personal boundaries
- Encouraging, positive and able to promote independence
- Flexible and willing to travel, including overnight stays
- Organised and able to work on their own initiative
- Fluent in spoken and written English
