Join Natural Curiosity at their Hermosa Field Station in the Gila National Forest in New Mexico for a summer of nature and art. As the sole Artist-in-Residence, you’ll have the rare opportunity to live and create in a truly remote environment surrounded by forested mountains, sweeping vistas, and the quiet stillness that inspires deep creative work. Located two hours from the nearest town, Hermosa offers uninterrupted time and space for reflection, exploration, and artistic growth.
You’ll share the field station with a small group of undergraduate research students and Natural Curiosity staff, becoming part of a close-knit community that quickly begins to feel like family. While you’ll have plenty of solitude for your art, you’ll also have the chance to join students and staff on hikes, and have possible opportunities to experience backpacking, informal biology lessons, and animal packing. These experiences provide a unique window into the natural systems that shape the landscape around you.
Life at Hermosa is simple, communal, and deeply connected to place. Expect meals on the front porch, star-filled nights, early mornings filled with birdsong, and long stretches of peaceful, creative time. The station’s remoteness invites you to slow down and immerse yourself fully in nature, allowing your work to be shaped by the land, the people, and the rhythms of the pinion juniper woodland.
For an artist seeking quiet, inspiration, and a meaningful connection to nature and community, Hermosa offers an unforgettable experience.
