There are also contentious teams in these jurisdictions working with the non-contentious regulatory team. This new role is pivotal for the Fin Reg practice as it grows, working with partners and leadership to develop a credible, integrated expertise function for the UK and European Fin Reg practice and embed collaborative practices globally.The role is supported by the EMEA Regional Head of Expertise and Legal Learning, and works with Expertise Lawyers, BD teams, and the CMG function. It is supported by the London Fin Reg Practice Executive team.Reporting toThe role reports to the London Fin Reg Expertise Partner, on behalf of the broader Fin Reg practice leadership team. The Expertise Partner and Expertise Counsel jointly develop and implement expertise plans for UK and European Fin Reg practice and ensure a coordinated global approach.Role overviewThe role requires an excellent technical and client-focused lawyer who can develop and drive forward Fin Reg expertise in a dynamic, impactful way for lawyers and clients. The successful candidate will:Guide and contribute to client and industry-facing thought leadership initiativesDevelop and manage high-quality internal and client-facing legal contentEnsure information, resources and insights are easy to accessDevelop and maintain standard documentation, guidance and know-howDevelop effective legal learning programmes for our lawyers and clients and coach junior lawyersDrive a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvementThe role suits someone with significant experience in a similar expertise-focused role in professional services or financial institutions, or a senior fee-earner transitioning to an expertise lawyer role.ResponsibilitiesStrategyPlay a leading role in setting, maintaining, evaluating and implementing Ashurst\’s Fin Reg expertise strategy and annual expertise plans to support the Fin Reg practice and firm strategy.Thought leadershipMaintain awareness of relevant legal, regulatory and commercial developments and coordinate with other practices to identify relevant developments or opportunities. Conduct horizon scanning to identify developments, issues and trends affecting clients and the broader financial services sector; assess impact on our practice, strategy and clients.Plan, create, coordinate and support client campaigns on significant Fin Reg developments. Produce client publications, thought pieces, insights and analysis, and provide training.Prepare articles for Ashurst website, LinkedIn, and trade publications to inform clients of regulatory developments.Prepare articles for trade publications showing understanding of developments with value-added content.Client engagementGuide Fin Reg client training, pitches and ongoing client development.Support leadership to identify and take to market client engagement strategies through horizon scanning and regulatory knowledge.Collaborate with other practices, regions and industries to identify cross-selling and growth opportunities.External engagementRaise Ashurst\’s profile in Fin Reg by building networks within the financial services sector, including trade bodies, directories, clients and prospective clients.Attend relevant trade association meetings and events and report insights to the team.Legal learning and on-the-job coachingFoster a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.Enhance Fin Reg training to align with the expertise plan and practice strategy; equip junior lawyers and ensure fee earners stay up to date with changes in law and market practice.Provide introductory and hot-topic training for other Ashurst teams.Create engaging training materials aligned with the Ashurst brand; assess training effectiveness and tailor programs accordingly.Provide technical advice and support to lawyers at all levels; mentor junior lawyers to develop high technical standards.Knowledge sharing, tools and techDevelop and maintain systems for knowledge sharing.Identify, test, implement and champion tools and technology to support fee earners.Consider impact of technology and AI developments on the practice.Risk mitigation, consistency and efficiencyResearch legal and market developments and, with partners, develop coherent policies and guidance.Draft and maintain standard documents to respond to developments so fee earners have strong starting points.Develop, collate, coordinate and update supporting guides and know-how/resources, including collaboration with K&E and other legal teams across Ashurst.Firmwide expertise initiativesParticipate in firmwide and cross-practice expertise initiatives.Skills and experienceLegal experienceQualified in the UK or an EU jurisdiction.Technical proficiency equivalent to partner or counsel level.Experience across key UK and European regulatory initiatives including MiFID, CRD/CRR, AIFMD, sustainability, financial crime, payments and e-money and FinTech developments.Genuine interest in financial services, capital markets and exceptional client service delivery, including innovative approaches.Significant client-facing experience.StrengthsConfident in building trusted partner relationships across the practice and firm.Proactively leads thought leadership and client development initiatives.Skilled at analysing complex legal issues and providing pragmatic commercial solutions.Strong written and oral communication skills; independent and team-working capability.Pro-active in supporting individual and team delivery; enthusiastic about developing lawyers and sharing knowledge.Champions quality, consistency and legal excellence; embraces legal technology and process improvement.AccessibilityWe are committed to accessible recruitment.
