The Role

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the SHEQC Manager will be responsible for supporting, developing and maintaining the company’s safety, health, environmental, quality and carbon management arrangements. This is a key role within the business, working closely with directors, managers, site teams, clients, external consultants and certification bodies. The successful candidate will help ensure Ashford continues to meet its legal, regulatory, client and certification obligations, while also improving systems, processes, culture and environmental performance. As the company’s Carbon Champion, you will also help develop and implement Ashford’s low-carbon strategy and support our ongoing journey towards net zero.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing day-to-day health, safety, environmental, quality and carbon matters across the business.
  • Supporting directors, managers and site teams with practical SHEQC advice and guidance.
  • Keeping up to date with relevant legislation, industry guidance, client requirements and best practice.
  • Producing, reviewing and maintaining risk assessments, method statements and COSHH assessments.
  • Carrying out site audits, workplace inspections and premises inspections.
  • Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses, ensuring corrective and preventative actions are implemented.
  • Managing PPE standards, equipment certification, PAT records and other compliance records.
  • Preparing site health and safety files and supporting project-specific documentation.
  • Producing and delivering toolbox talks, safety briefings and internal guidance.
  • Managing fire safety arrangements, including fire drills, evacuation procedures, fire alarm testing and extinguisher maintenance.
  • Liaising with HR and operational managers to identify training needs.
  • Managing external accreditations and certifications, including BSI, Constructionline, CHAS, SafeContractor, Achilles and similar schemes.
  • Coordinating external audits with BSI, Achilles, insurers and other relevant bodies.
  • Managing internal audits, management reviews and associated action plans.
  • Chairing workforce health and safety consultation meetings.
  • Completing SHEQC questionnaires for tenders, pre-qualification submissions and client onboarding.
  • Supporting tender submissions and client presentations where SHEQC input is required.
  • Developing and maintaining the company’s carbon reduction strategy.

About You

We are looking for someone who is organised, practical, credible and confident working across both office and site environments. You will be comfortable dealing with directors, managers, engineers, site operatives, clients, auditors and external consultants. Just as importantly, you will be able to turn compliance requirements into practical, workable processes that support the business. The right person will be proactive, detail-focused and capable of taking ownership of the SHEQC function while working collaboratively with others.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience in a health and safety, SHEQ, SHEQC or compliance management role.
  • Experience within construction, building services, engineering, facilities, water treatment or a related technical environment.
  • Good working knowledge of health and safety legislation and practical site safety management.
  • Experience producing and reviewing RAMS and COSHH assessments.
  • Experience managing audits, inspections, corrective actions and compliance records.
  • Familiarity with ISO management systems, ideally ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and general document management systems.
  • A practical, hands-on approach and the ability to prioritise in a busy working environment.

Qualifications

Ideally, candidates will hold:

  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent as a minimum.
  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent higher-level qualification would be advantageous.
  • IOSH membership, or willingness to work towards membership.
  • Internal auditor training or experience would be beneficial.
  • Environmental, quality or carbon-related qualifications would also be advantageous.
