Theatre Practitioner, Ashford Theatres

The successful candidate will work as part of a team to provide a safe, cost-effective, and efficient care environment for patients, relatives, and carers. You will be expected to function clinically within the Operating Department, carrying out scrub and circulating roles. Additionally, you will participate in training junior staff and continue your personal and professional development by rotating within the perioperative department.

Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are vital for this role when interacting with all levels of staff, including the multidisciplinary team, patients, and relatives, taking into account impairments, levels of consciousness, and language barriers.

You will be required to adhere to local policies, guidelines, and SOPs to maintain high standards of quality care within the department.

Responsibilities include providing specialist support and knowledge to patients within clinical areas of the operating department and surrounding areas. You will act as a role model, creating an environment that promotes excellence in theatre practice and empowers staff to develop high levels of clinical skills and autonomy.

You will deliver skilled practical care to patients, leading in monitoring, planning, and delivering individualized patient care, and providing specialist advice to junior staff. There is an expectation to extend knowledge and skills through rotation to other specialties.

You will participate in emergency cover, including out-of-hours shifts, on-call duties, and night rotations where applicable. Competency in current emergency resuscitation techniques, both in theory and practice, is required.

Reporting any complaints, accidents, incidents, or unusual occurrences to the Clinical Manager is essential, along with ensuring remedial actions are taken and incident forms are completed appropriately.

A personal duty of care involves keeping yourself and colleagues updated on new equipment and procedures. Active participation in research and clinical audits to promote practice changes is encouraged. Rigorous adherence to infection control practices, including hand hygiene and universal precautions, must be maintained.

Ashford Hospital is a dedicated Elective Centre with advanced facilities, including eight theatres with laminar airflow systems, a 13-bed recovery suite, and specialty theatres such as ophthalmic, breast, colorectal, bariatric, upper GI, ENT, gynecology & obstetrics, maxillofacial, orthopedics, and vascular surgery.

We offer an exciting opportunity for proactive and motivated practitioners to join our theatre team. Previous theatre experience is welcome, whether from other specialties or those starting their nursing or ODP careers. Our training includes rotations across departments, in-house training, and opportunities to attend conferences and training off-site in collaboration with local universities, including pathways to become Surgical First Assistants and Anaesthetic Practitioners.
