Hi, I’m Abhik, Ashby’s Co-Founder and VP of Engineering. I design and build software by iterating in code and grounding prototypes in real data. At Ashby you can design and build without choosing between the two. What we’re asking engineers to tackle aligns with expanding and enhancing our in‑house design system and consulting on bespoke work, while improving our product’s usability and performance for professionals, starting with talent teams.
Responsibilities
- Redesign our mobile web app by talking with customers, wireframing new flows, implementing the design system, and turning wireframes into reality.
- Build flexible, composable components in our design system to enable other engineers to create custom autocompletes with filters and options to create new records.
- Help improve a design’s information hierarchy and scannability for viewing a candidate’s assessments so recruiters can quickly parse information and spot issues.
These projects reflect Ashby’s goal: improve the productivity of working professionals with intelligent, powerful software. We aim for an experience approachable to beginners but extensible by power users. Our reference point remains high‑level, like spreadsheets in terms of usability and capability.
Engineering Culture
- Minimal process with ownership over decisions normally made by product and design.
- Natural collaboration and deliberate communication.
- Investment in tools and abstractions that give us leverage.
- Building a diverse team with effort and intention.
We empower engineers to own end‑to‑end problems: research, write specs, build wireframes, and implement solutions while collaborating with product managers and designers. Collaboration is encouraged, and focus time is protected.
Interview Process
- Introduction call with Hiring Manager (15–30 minutes, live).
- A technical screen where we pair in our actual codebase (1 hour, live).
- Three non‑coding interviews focusing on product thinking, technical design, and infrastructure (about 3 hours 15 minutes, live; can be split across days).
- We may add an additional 30‑minute screen with a recruiter.
- Your hiring manager will prep you for interviews and provide written guidance.
- You’ll meet 4 to 6 people in engineering, with 5–15 minutes to ask questions in each interview.
- If we don’t extend an offer, we’ll provide feedback.
Your First Three Months
Onboarding is designed to be exceptional. Your environment is set up with a single script, you push your first product change on day one, and you spend the rest of your time delivering changes that demonstrate our codebase and best practices. A 30/60/90‑day review helps calibrate how we work together. You’ll be paired with a peer for questions and pairing, and the team will run training sessions on culture, product, engineering process, and technical architecture.
Technology Stack
TypeScript (frontend & backend), React, GraphQL API, Node.js, Postgres, Redis. We don’t require prior experience in these technologies but value a love of typed languages and strong fundamentals. Engineers often transition from other languages, and we value how quickly you learn.
Benefits
- Competitive salary and equity.
- 10‑year exercise window for stock options.
- Unlimited PTO and encouragement to take it.
- Minimum of 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave, with regional variations as needed.
- Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget.
- $100/month education budget with approvals for more expensive items like conferences.
- Health insurance: in the US, 100% of premiums for you and dependents; in other countries, high‑quality supplemental coverage.
