Software Support Engineer in Warrington

Overview

Hybrid working with one day a week in the office in either Warrington or Limerick. My client is a global solutions provider with offices in the UK, Ireland, and North America. They are seeking an experienced Software Support Engineer with strong Java expertise to join their team.

In this role, you will analyse and resolve software issues, develop solutions, and implement changes in the customer environment. In addition to strong Java experience, knowledge or experience with IBM iSeries (RPG/SQL) is a plus, and there’s a clear path to transitioning into modern development technologies. Success in this role comes from taking smart risks, demonstrating leadership, and consistently exceeding customer expectations. This position is ideal for someone with a background in Java software development who is interested in moving into software support, or for someone already highly experienced in a software support role.

Role Responsibilities

• Perform technical analysis on production software with a view to isolating faults and identifying suitable low-impact solutions.
• Liaise in a professional manner with customers to assist in problem resolution and ensure elimination of software defects.
• Ensure that any identified fixes have been thoroughly tested and accepted before release to customer environments.
• Ensure that fault analysis, diagnosis and resolution adhere to SLA commitments.
• Perform coding, unit testing, and integration tasks in line with the company’s Software Development guidelines to a satisfactory level of quality.
• Design and maintain technical software specifications in accordance with company standards.
• Develop and deliver JAVA software solutions specific to customer needs.
• Contribute to the deployment of software into production environments; due to the business-critical nature of such deployments, out-of-hours work may be required.
• Collaborate with the development team to identify opportunities for automation, continuous improvement, and progression toward modern technologies.

• Undertake off-site travel if required to complete assigned work.
• Help create a culture of learning, trust, and self-improvement.
• Ensure awareness and compliance with ISO9001, ISO27001, ISO22301, PCI and UK GDPR regulations.
• Any other duties as required.

Knowledge and Skills

• Proficiency in JAVA programming
• Any IBM iSeries (RPG 400 / RPG IV / RPG ILE, SQL) experience is a bonus.
• Experience with Rational Developer tools is an advantage.
• Solid grasp of programming concepts and structured software development.
• Appreciation of ITIL standards (incident, problem, and change management).
• Excellent documentation and communication skills.
• Ability to manage changing priorities and workloads effectively.
• Passionate about Java development essential (experience with Java, Spring Boot, or related frameworks would be an advantage).
• Telecommunications or Energy industry experience is desirable.
• Flexible approach, with willingness to work out of hours when required.
• Proficient in SQL and database-driven development.
• Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work to agreed SLAs under pressure.
