About the Role

We are seeking an experienced NPD Mechanical Design Engineer to join our R&D team.

This is a key role focused on turning innovation development into manufacturable products by optimising Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, good product designs, and ensuring the successful industrialisation of New Product Introductions (NPI).

You will collaborate with R&D engineers, production technicians, quality and supply chain teams to maintain stable, capable, and efficient processes that meet the exacting standards for electro-mechanical devices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Turn R&D innovation into a manufacturable product; implementation of electromechanical development by working alongside R&D engineers: Mechanisms, PCBs, signal and power cables, microfluidics, sensors, etc
  • Product enclosure design with EMI/EMC in mind
  • Ensure good practice in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA).
  • Build and test prototypes to validate design and function.
  • Analyse and improve product assembly processes to enhance quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Lead compliance of products, such as CE Marking, EMC Testing, FCC, CSA, etc.
  • Develop and validate manufacturing tooling, jigs, fixtures, and measurement systems.
  • Drive the industrialisation of NPI, product assembly instructions, and FAT (Factory Acceptance Tests).
  • Lead the NPI process from R&D to the Manufacturing team.
  • Provide technical training to the Manufacturing team
  • 8+ years’ experience as a Mechanical Engineer/Design Engineer in electro-mechanical products or similar; ideally a background in medical devices, lab instruments, biotech and automation.
  • Proven track record of delivering products from concept to manufacturing with a focus on DFM and DFA, ideally in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Advanced CAD modelling skills in Solid Works.
  • Skilled in creating and interpreting complex engineering drawings.
  • A good understanding of Product Life Cycle management.
  • Experience in cable design and cable routing for EMI/EMC.
  • Advanced knowledge in manufacturing techniques such as injection moulding, blow moulding, metal fabrication and machining.
  • A good understanding of materials and surface treatments for chemical resistance and electrical conductivity.
  • Ability to write product assembly instructions and technical documentation.
  • Hands-on experience with Lean Manufacturing methods and Six Sigma.
  • Excellent presentation skills in Power Point and ability to communicate effectively to both technical and commercial stakeholders (Managers and Directors).
  • Ability to visit various suppliers.
  • Open to international travel to visit manufacturing sites.

Desirable but not essential

  • Experience in Industrial Design / Product Design
  • Experience with automated test setups of prototypes and Python-based test scripting
  • Experience in automated manufacturing and assembly (robots and cobots)
