The Opportunity: We are looking for a Senior Civil Engineer to join our established and growing civil engineering team in Southampton. Candidates should have excellent communication, technical and leadership skills and enjoy working collaboratively in multi-professional design teams, taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion, striving for excellence in delivery.

At Arup, you will join a supportive team where you can continue to develop your technical expertise or progress into broader delivery responsibilities, with clear support for your career development.

Reporting to the Southampton Civil Engineering sub-team leader, you will be responsible for:

  • Managing multidisciplinary engineering projects, planning resources and monitoring commercial performance.
  • Working closely with other teams in Arup, particularly our Buildings team in Southampton.
  • Leading the preparation and review of technical deliverables relevant to civil engineering including drawings, reports, specifications and presentations.
  • Line managing technical staff (engineers and technicians) including appraisals and performance development and supporting the team as it grows.
  • Embracing our Culture, Equity and Inclusion strategy and vision, both through your own behaviour and influencing others.
  • Contributing to a culture of technical excellence and the development of technical skills within the wider team through planning and delivery of initiatives and training.
  • Contributing to our ambitious growth plans on the South Coast through involvement in business development, work winning and client relationship management.

Is this role right for you? A highly motivated individual, you will have achieved or be close to achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status of a relevant professional institution (such as ICE or equivalent).

Your qualifications, skills and experience will include:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or similar.
  • Strong technical background in one or more areas relevant to civil engineering (earthworks, roads and streets, public realm, utilities, flood risk and drainage) as a core specialism, as well as ideally a wider interest in a complementary aspect of infrastructure development (planning and project management, sustainability, carbon management, infrastructure resilience, etc).
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, and an ability to interact with clients and other members of the professional team with confidence.
  • An ability to manage a complex and varied workload often involving multiple concurrent projects.
  • A track record of successful project completion in UK and/or internationally.
  • An ability to motivate and lead others in an inclusive way.
  • An ability to focus on design excellence and a willingness to contribute to continuous quality improvement.
