Your study pattern could be day or block release, or via distance learning, depending on the course you enrol in. A dedicated mentor will guide you through your personal and professional development. The Opportunity

As an Apprentice Fire Safety Engineer at Arup, you will develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours in the following areas:

  • Understanding the first principles of fire engineering including fire dynamics, smoke dynamics, heat transfer, human behaviour, psychological impact of fire on humans, physiological impacts of fire (tenability), combustion processes, products of combustion, structural response and how they are used.
  • Application of legal and regulatory frameworks, statutory guidance and British and European Standard guidance in the context of fire engineering.
  • Assessing and evaluating fire engineering solutions, systems, products and processes throughout the lifecycle of a project including design, construction and occupation.
  • Programme and project management.
  • Research, information management and report writing.
  • Developing teamwork, communication skills and collaboration by working within other engineering professionals, regulatory professionals and clients.

These competencies will be developed through practical on‑the‑job training, working with experienced fire engineers and other professionals across the business, and classroom‑based training with Arup and at university – following an apprenticeship pathway to an undergraduate degree in Fire Engineering. The apprenticeship typically runs over a 5–6 year period, during which you will undertake a supervised programme of training and block release with a university. You will also be assigned a mentor within the Fire team who will work and liaise closely with you, guiding and advising you throughout your time as an apprentice.
