Senior HVDC Engineer

The Opportunity

Arup seeks a highly capable and motivated specialist HVDC engineer to join our High Voltage Technical team in Manchester, Birmingham or Bristol. You will work on a growing pipeline of HVDC projects – from interconnectors and offshore wind to innovative HVDC technology and infrastructure – and help drive the energy transition through the delivery of resilient and sustainable solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of HVDC projects within a team or independently.
  • Contribute to bids and business‑development initiatives.
  • Translate client requirements into innovative, pragmatic, and cost‑effective HVDC solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership in project interface management and risk mitigation.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Systems or similar.
  • Strong technical HVDC experience, including interconnectors, offshore wind farms and related projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of HVDC systems, converter station layouts, standards, and technical specifications.
  • Experience in system design, studies, project interface management and technical risk management.
  • Familiarity with UK and international transmission network grid connection processes and Grid Codes.
  • Experience with HVDC pre‑commissioning, commissioning activities, FATs, SATs and operational/asset management.
  • Knowledge of power system analysis software (PowerFactory, PSS/E, PSCAD, EMTP‑ATP).
  • Power system consultancy experience.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within the UK and occasionally overseas.
  • Preferably a Chartered Engineer or progressing toward chartership with the IET.
