As part of the Climate and Sustainability business, our consultants have extensive expertise in carbon management. Arup has been involved in numerous projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promoting sustainable practices. We supported the UK Government’s sustainability efforts for COP26 by developing a Carbon Management Plan and establishing a sustainable supply chain. Additionally, we helped G7 Summit 2021 achieve ISO 20121 certification and deliver a carbon-neutral event. Our work includes devising a Net Zero Plan for Queen's University Belfast, providing decarbonisation services for Northern Ireland Water, developing emissions monitoring tools for VisitScotland, and collaborating on emissions pathway analysis with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. We also drive carbon improvements in major infrastructure projects like TRU and The Holyhead Hydrogen Hub. Our multidisciplinary approach, shaped by our engineering heritage and complemented by technical skills, enables us to tackle complex sustainability challenges and deliver impactful results.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Consultant in carbon management and assessment to work on projects such as developing Net Zero strategies, sustainability supply chain management, and impact assessments for infrastructure and development projects. We look for someone passionate about shaping a better world, capable of developing and delivering our carbon and climate change services with technical expertise. The role can be based in any of our eleven offices across the North.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting carbon assessments
- Advising on decarbonisation
- Performing whole-life carbon assessments
- Reviewing carbon modelling
- Supporting business development activities such as preparing proposals and engaging with clients
- Contributing to developing our services and mentoring others in carbon and climate change knowledge

Is this role right for you?
We are looking for candidates with:
- Bachelor’s or master’s qualification in a relevant field such as Carbon and/or Climate Change Management, Civil/Mechanical/Electrical/Environmental Engineering, Geography, or Environmental Science
- Chartership or progress towards it, e.g., Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv, CEng) (desirable)
- Knowledge in carbon assessment and modelling, including mitigation strategies
- An understanding of UK and/or devolved policy and regulatory frameworks for carbon and climate
