The Opportunity

We are looking for a seasoned Senior Drainage Engineer to direct design teams on a wide range of projects. You will be part of a large team working on major schemes including aviation and highways, reporting on a day-to-day basis to the Project Manager or acting as Project Manager on small to medium scale projects. The role will combine excellent technical appreciation of drainage design with the ability to deliver and manage whilst recognising quality, cost and time demands. It will include design, management and coordination, often liaising with other multi-disciplinary contributors to the project. You will also be given the opportunity to assist senior staff with the management of larger projects including quality and project management, and to mentor junior staff in the design and management of highways schemes.

Skills & Experience

  • Bring in-depth expert technical drainage knowledge to the team.
  • Work on your own and proactively on projects at all stages from concept and feasibility through to detailed design and build.
  • Own a design team and have remit for delivery to the specified cost, quality, and programme.
  • Mentor colleagues, including graduates, technicians, and apprentices — providing guidance, training, and feedback.
  • Ensure compliance with adherence to local Arup Management System Assurance procedures.
  • Report to the team leader or project manager and liaise on a regular basis with other teams, offices, clients, and external contacts.
  • Strong technical drainage skills, and a willingness to become a drainage skills advocate would be expected.
  • Extensive knowledge of the latest drainage design software.
  • Good exposure in the preparation of drainage standard details and specifications.
  • An excellent working knowledge of drainage standards, including DMRB, SUDs and Local Authority Standards.
  • You should be a seasoned engineer with both design and management background with good appreciation of the design process, including delivery of design under Design and Build projects.
  • Planning and managing the technical delivery of projects, including adequacy of design compliance with standards and legislation.
  • Capable of working within a design team, both locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Ability to liaise with external parties, as the primary contact would include clients (at a technical level), contractors, and government agencies.
  • Academic qualification i.e. BEng / MEng or similar.
  • Ideally a Chartered or Incorporated Civil Engineer (CEng) or (IEng).
