In this role you will lead overhead line design for a range of transmission projects, shaping technical solutions and mentoring junior engineers. You will work within Arup’s transmission and distribution team on major infrastructure initiatives, including the Great Grid Partnership, contributing to a modern, low-carbon UK energy network. Your impact spans feasibility through to detailed design and digital delivery, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to meet programme, budget, and quality goals. Responsibilities

  • Lead feasibility studies, design reports and technical documentation
  • Deliver and supervise detailed OHL design activities including routing, profiling, and design calculations
  • Produce and review drawings, models, and digital design outputs using CAD and specialist tools
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders to deliver integrated design solutions
  • Support management of project deliverables to programme, budget, and quality requirements
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, innovation and digital design approaches

Key requirements

  • Experience in overhead line design
  • OHL design principles across EHV systems (33kV–400kV+)
  • PLS-CADD and other industry-standard design software
  • Sag & tension calculations, line profiling, routing optimisation
  • Structural concepts relating to towers, foundations, and line components
  • Engineering design delivery within consultancy or contractor environments
  • Technical checking and assurance of design outputs
  • Ownership of technical deliverables and project leadership
  • Strong communication skills and client engagement ability
