This is an opportunity for a talented and enthusiastic Technical Lead Engineer to join our Newcastle Data Centre team, supporting the current growth and opportunity in the Data Centre market. Our team is looking to strengthen its project level leadership through the recruitment of an engineering lead who can provide a combination of technical, project and business area leadership. They will hold specific multi‑disciplinary technical leadership and management responsibilities within the data centre business areas.

Responsibilities

  • Provide project leadership to a design team assembled across Arup’s North region offices, technically supported by our UKIMEA Data Centre centres of excellence.
  • Translating client requirements into an appropriate and clear project delivery approach, making sound decisions and communicating effectively at all levels.
  • Overall responsibility for technical delivery of multidisciplinary projects from initial planning through detailed design and site implementation.
  • Successfully delivering a complex and challenging workload.
  • Managing finances and staffing resources to ensure successful delivery of projects within agreed budgets.
  • Provide technical multidisciplinary leadership and represent the design and/or discipline team in discussions with the client and contractors regarding topics such as: multi‑disciplinary design solutions, PUE and efficiencies, TIER levels of resilience and business continuity, testing and commissioning, ensuring appropriate design checks and quality assurance procedures are undertaken.
  • Bringing innovation and best practice to projects; sharing knowledge, providing guidance, training and feedback.
  • Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior members of the team.
  • Maintaining an understanding of the data centre market and forecasting growth through regular client contact and attendance at relevant industry conferences and networking events.
  • Working in collaboration with the region’s Data Centre business area leader to support business development opportunities, marketing and quality management.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering or similar with Chartered Engineer status.
  • Responsible and accountable for the overall design, technical delivery, quality and/or management of the ACSMEP design of large, complex Data Centre projects, coordinating many different people, facilities and resources within defined budgets and timescales.
  • Act as Technical Lead on major data centre projects where Arup is lead consultant.
  • Assist with the recruitment, appraisal, performance, development, morale and motivation of specific staff within the team/group.
  • Responsible for negotiating significant contracts with clients, customers and suppliers.
  • Ability to take the lead role in the preparation and presentation of bids, and to liaise directly with high‑profile clients.
  • Working with the wider Arup, Focus Markets and North leadership to win work – new and repeat business – and for making tactical decisions affecting projects and business units.
  • Experience of data centre design and mission‑critical standards and best practice, including large‑scale completed projects; demonstrable Data Centre project leadership experience is essential.
