The Opportunity
We are looking to recruit a highly capable and motivated specialist HVDC engineer to join our High Voltage Technical team in Manchester, Birmingham or Bristol due to our growing pipeline of HVDC projects. Arup is delivering expert technical advice, design and innovation on world leading HVDC projects across the UK, EU and globally. This ranges from HVDC interconnectors to HVDC connected offshore wind to innovation in HVDC technology and infrastructure. You will join an experienced and enthusiastic technical team, helping to drive the energy transition through the delivery of innovative, resilient and sustainable HVDC infrastructure.
The role will involve leading delivery of projects within a team or as an individual as well as leading or contributing to bids and business development initiatives. The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate a proven ability to understand client requirements and provide innovative yet pragmatic and cost‑effective solutions. From NeuConnect to National Grid, you will have the opportunity to work on an immensely varied range of HVDC related projects, which have significant impact locally and internationally.

Is this role right for you?
We are looking for a candidate with strong technical HVDC experience holding a degree in Electrical Engineering / Electrical Power Systems or similar. Preferably you will be a Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership with the IET.
Required skills and experience
- Technical experience in development and delivery of HVDC projects such as interconnectors (onshore, offshore) and/or offshore wind farms.
- Extensive knowledge of HVDC systems and technologies, converter station layouts and standards.
- Experience in HVDC technical specifications, system design and studies.
- Experience in HVDC project interface management and technical risk management.
- Knowledge of UK and international transmission network grid connection processes and Grid Codes.
- Post‑graduate degree in HVDC or electrical engineering / power systems.
- Experience in HVDC pre‑commissioning and commissioning activities, FATs and SATs, operational/asset management and performance.
- Experience of power system analysis in software packages such as PowerFactory, PSS/E, PSCAD, EMTP‑ATP.
- Power system consultancy experience.
- Ability and willingness to travel independently within the UK and occasionally overseas.
