Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for over 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world. Within our Transport team, we bring together specialists across disciplines to deliver integrated solutions that support sustainable mobility, improve connectivity and enhance the built environment.

This is an exciting time to join our expanding team, with growing opportunities across transport as we support Greater Manchester’s ambitions for sustainable mobility and inclusive connectivity. We are looking for a Highways Engineer to join our Transport team in Manchester. The role sits within the Roads and Streets team, where the successful candidate will contribute to a diverse portfolio of work spanning local authority schemes across the North West, National Highways projects, and major multidisciplinary infrastructure schemes.

Across the transport portfolio, the team works to find solutions to a wide range of challenges, from urban and rural road improvements to public transport and active travel schemes, covering all design stages from concept through to detailed design. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of transport infrastructure across the region through the application of their core technical skills, including alignment design, surface water drainage design, utilities co‑ordination, preparation of contract drawings and documents, and building federated 3D models to ensure seamless inter‑disciplinary design coordination.

Our team also leads the delivery of a number of transport projects, which provide opportunities to develop your project management and commercial skills in client‑facing roles, supporting your longer‑term career progression. We will consider applications for part‑time roles; please make your proposed hours clear on your applications with minimum 3 days a week required.

If you’re passionate about delivering high‑quality highways and infrastructure projects, we’d love to hear from you. You’ll bring experience in using industry‑standard software (such as Civils 3D, OpenRoads, InfoDrainage) and supporting the design and delivery of projects of varying scale. You’ll be confident communicating technical concepts, producing clear reports, presenting ideas, and working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

We’re keen to speak with individuals who hold an HND, degree or master’s in civil engineering, are professionally qualified or working toward qualification, and have genuine enthusiasm for a career in transport—particularly the full lifecycle of highway projects and the wider sector.

As a Highway Engineer or Senior Highway Engineer at Arup, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead the design of diverse transportation projects.
  • Learn advanced digital techniques and tools.
  • Develop and review drawings, reports, calculations and specifications, ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external clients and project stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and external consultants to deliver projects on time, within budget and to the highest quality standards.
  • Prepare bid documents for high‑profile projects, working within tight deadlines.
  • Support the delivery of highways and infrastructure projects across their full lifecycle—contributing to design, coordination, feasibility studies, statutory processes and NEC documentation.
  • Experience with NEC Project Management or Design & Build schemes is a bonus.
  • Use industry‑standard software.
  • Strong communication skills, the ability to explain technical issues clearly, and confidence working in multidisciplinary teams are essential.

We welcome applicants who are professionally qualified or working toward qualification and who are genuinely enthusiastic about transport and highways projects.
