Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world. We’re looking for Fire Engineers to join our UK team and help deliver a growing portfolio of high-impact, meaningful projects. Our work spans the iconic and the unconventional, from restoring Manchester’s Grade-I listed Town Hall to transforming the British Museum in one of the world’s largest cultural renovations. We also led fire safety on WorkStack, the UK’s first mass timber light industrial building and a RIBA London Award winner.
At Arup, we go beyond compliance. We conduct cutting-edge fire safety research, develop in-house digital tools, and collaborate with academia and industry to tackle emerging hazards and improve safety equity, especially for the most vulnerable. Join us and you’ll be part of a diverse, innovative team that’s been leading fire safety engineering for over 50 years.
The Opportunity: At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
You will complement our fire safety team and help deliver fire safety engineering services for our clients. As part of a 400+ strong fire safety skills network across 20 offices, your role will involve interactive and collaborative working with fire safety colleagues and multidisciplinary teams at Arup. We appreciate that everyone’s circumstances are different and it’s not always easy to commit to standard working hours. Work Unbound is our innovative hybrid approach to working and gives all our members greater flexibility in deciding how and where they work.
Is this role right for you? You’ll either be working towards Chartered Engineer status or have a real motivation to achieve this. If it’s the latter, we will support you with what you need to succeed here.
As a Fire Engineer you would be expected:
- To understand and implement the principle of fire science on real projects via the engineering process (goals, objectives, building appraisal and hazards, design fire scenarios etc).
- To understand the Total Fire Safety concept: from client brief, through design and construction; taking account of the socio-technical context, seeking to pre-empt fire safety issues common at different stages of a project, so that the end result delivers on the client brief.
- To investigate and apply appropriate legislation and design guidance for use on your projects.
- To develop and implement fire strategies in collaboration with the design team and relevant stakeholders.
Qualification in a relevant subject (fire engineering, other types of engineering, or architecture related). Experience in a fire engineering consultancy or similar environment (industry related). Knowledge of applicable legislation and guidance used in the UK, and awareness of the new regulatory regime. Excellent report writing and communication skills - be collaborative, be creative and engaging. Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, working to tight deadlines and juggling multiple demands and deliverables. Proactivity in resolving issues, creating solutions, relying on others as required for assistance and experience.
What we offer you: At Arup, we care about each member’s success, so we can grow together. Guided by our values, we provide an attractive total reward package that recognises the contribution of each of our members to our shared success. As well as competitive, fair and equitable pay, we offer a career in which all of our members can belong, grow and thrive – through benefits that support health and wellbeing, a wide range of learning opportunities and many possibilities to have an impact through the work they do.
We are owned in trust on behalf of our members, giving us the freedom, with personal responsibility, to set our own direction and choose work that aligns with our purpose and adds to Arup’s legacy. Profit Share is a key part of our reward, enabling members to share in the results of our collective efforts. We also provide Private medical insurance, Life assurance, Accident insurance and Income protection cover. In addition, you’ll have access to flexible benefits to help you look after all aspects of your wellbeing and give you the freedom and flexibility to find the best solutions for you, your family, and your individual needs.
