The Opportunity

To support our continued growth in Energy, we have a new opportunity for an Energy Consultant (Electrical) to join our team in either Manchester or Sheffield. This role focuses on the development of electrical infrastructure and power systems solutions, with particular emphasis on HV grid connections, network integration, and the electrification of energy systems. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting the delivery of low‑carbon projects, gaining hands‑on experience in electrical network design, grid constraints, and power system analysis across a diverse portfolio of projects. Recent projects include solar PV, electricity storage, low‑temperature heat networks, low‑carbon heat generation, hydrogen for transport, biomass CHP, energy recovery facilities, and standby gas generation for data centres, energy market reserves, and university, healthcare, and data centre campuses.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

You will support project teams in developing strategies, solutions, and integrated schemes for public and private sector clients. This will involve undertaking technical analysis and modelling of electrical systems, supporting feasibility studies and early‑stage design of electrical infrastructure. You will assist in preparing technical outputs, such as reports, calculations, and (where appropriate) electrical schematics or system layouts, with support from senior engineers and also assist in the delivery of decarbonisation and energy studies, with a focus on electrification strategies and power system impacts at estate, city, and regional scales. You will also advise clients on power system requirements for low‑carbon projects, including renewable generation, energy storage, and the electrification of heat and transport.

Another aspect of the role is to contribute to the delivery of HV grid connection studies, including engagement with DNOs/TSOs, understanding connection processes, and identifying network constraints and opportunities and to the development of electrical infrastructure solutions, including:

  • HV and LV network design inputs.
  • Grid connection strategies and applications.
  • Load assessments and demand analysis.

We are seeking individuals with the following:

  • BSc in Electrical Engineering (power systems focused is preferred) and working towards Chartership and membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g. IET).
  • A strong grounding in electrical engineering principles, particularly: Power systems, Electrical distribution networks and Infrastructure design basics.
  • Understanding (academic or practical) of HV grid connections, including: Connection processes, Interface with DNOs/TSOs and Grid capacity/constraints.
  • An interest in energy systems and decarbonisation, including renewables, storage, and low‑carbon infrastructure.
  • The ability to undertake technical analysis, modelling, and report writing, with support from senior team members.

This role does not meet the criteria for visa sponsorship under the UK immigration system. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
