Overview
In this Principal HV Electrical Engineer role, you contribute to Arup’s growing London team by leading high‑voltage and medium‑voltage electrical design for complex projects. You’ll guide the full design lifecycle from inception to delivery, mentor junior engineers, and ensure high‑quality technical outputs. You work closely with clients, regulators and multidisciplinary teams to shape resilient power systems for infrastructure, data centers and renewables, supporting Arup’s net‑zero ambitions. This is a hands‑on leadership role with a strong client‑facing and delivery focus.

Responsibilities
- Lead HV/MV network design and optimisation
- Deliver detailed power‑system studies
- Develop earthing and substation layouts
- Coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces
- Review contractor and vendor submissions
- Support procurement of HV/MV equipment
- Liaise with clients, utilities and regulators
- Prepare clear technical documentation and presentations for stakeholders
Key requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline) and professional registration with IET or CIBSE
- Deep domain knowledge in electrical engineering and familiarity with BS/IEC standards (BS 7671, BS 7430, BS 5839, BS 9999, BS EN 50522, IEC 60909, IEC 61936, IEC 60287)
- Proficiency in electrical design tools (ETAP, DigSILENT, CDEGS, Cymcap, PSCAD, Trimble ProDesign)
- Strong understanding of protection principles and schemes (grading studies, protection calculations, relay setting coordination)
- Knowledge of SCADA architectures and protocols (IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3)
