The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Historic Environment Consultant to join our growing London team. This is an exciting opportunity for a professional with strong expertise in UK archaeology and heritage consultancy to play a key role in delivering complex projects and contributing to the strategic development of our historic environment offer. This is a full-time, permanent position based at our London office, within the multidisciplinary Environment and Sustainability Services (ECS) team, which comprises almost 360 staff across the UK. Our projects span the UK, and the role will require occasional travel to other Arup offices and project locations.

The role requires proven experience in the design, procurement and management of archaeological fieldwork. You will take a leading role in overseeing fieldwork programmes, managing delivery from planning and consent stages through to completion, and developing bespoke archaeological strategies for major infrastructure and development projects.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Leading the preparation of Historic Environment Desk-Based Assessments, undertaking site and archive visits, and contributing to Environmental Statement (ES) chapters.
• Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and managing, mentoring and reviewing the work of others, ensuring high-quality outputs and robust technical standards.
• Providing inputs and delivering competitive tenders for prospective work.

Is this role right for you? We are looking for people with the following skills:

• Bachelor’s Degree and/or master’s degree in Archaeology or related subject; and Membership (ACIfA minimum, MCIfA preferred) of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists CIfA.
• Full UK Driving License as you will be required to travel to locations beyond the London Region.
• Sound knowledge of the UK legislative framework and policy and its practical application to projects affecting the historic environment.
• Extensive experience of undertaking and management of Historic Environment DBA, Heritage Statements, Written Scheme of Investigations and EIA chapters (including setting assessments).
• Experience in delivering Archaeological Clerk of Works (ACoW) services.
• Experience in delivering and supporting Historic Environment assessments through Development Consent Order (DCO) application (not essential to apply).
• Experience of archaeological fieldwork project management, confident user of GIS (ArcGIS Pro preferred) and dataset manipulation.
