You will be joining Arup’s Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) discipline within the Intelligent Mobility team. The team works at the forefront of transport technology, delivering ITS, operational technology and digital solutions that improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of transport networks. Our work spans major UK infrastructure schemes and an expanding portfolio of international projects, collaborating closely with colleagues across Highways, Energy and Digital practices.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior ITS Engineer to play a key role in the delivery of Intelligent Transport Systems and operational technology projects across the UK, particularly on the strategic road network and major infrastructure schemes. This role offers the opportunity to work on high‑profile projects that directly improve network performance and user experience. You will be involved across the full lifecycle of ITS delivery, from early‑stage tender support and preliminary design through to detailed design, system integration, independent engineering, specification development and construction support. Our portfolio includes nationally significant projects such as Lower Thames Crossing, Silvertown Tunnel, Smart Motorway schemes, and the development of National Highways Tunnel Operational Systems Specifications. Alongside our UK work, the team is seeing growing demand for international transport technology projects, offering opportunities to apply UK expertise to complex programmes globally. While your primary focus will be ITS, you will also have opportunities to broaden your experience across Low Emission Mobility, Mobility Pricing and Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) within the wider Intelligent Mobility team.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you? We are keen to hear from engineers with a strong background in ITS and transport technology. You are likely to bring:

  • A degree in Electrical, Electronic, Systems or Communications Engineering (or equivalent), with a commitment to professional development
  • Proven experience delivering ITS design or consultancy projects in the UK, ideally within highways, tunnels or major infrastructure environments
  • Direct experience working on National Highways projects, applying relevant standards and requirements
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to interpret and apply technical standards and client specifications
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the confidence to work in multidisciplinary teams and engage with clients.
