Graduate Lighting Designer (5735) role at Arup

We’re looking for Graduate Lighting Designers to join our team of bright professionals to assist on all aspects of lighting projects: from concept development to detailed lighting specifications. From your first day, you’ll join an unrivalled community of experts in architectural lighting and daylighting design where everyone is supported in their career path and encouraged to work towards a professional qualification.

The Opportunity

You’ll help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients. While you’ll have a great deal of responsibility from day one, we’ll give you the chance to take on more as you progress and broaden your skills.

Working mainly with our senior designers on a wide range of national and international projects, and supporting other team members, this is an excellent opportunity to learn about lighting design, develop skills and subsequently work on your own projects.

The Role Involves

  • Hands on lighting design for a range of projects
  • Carrying out lighting calculations
  • Preparation of renderings, drawings, and specifications
  • Assisting the production of project related correspondence and reports
  • Project and team administration duties
  • Co-ordinating work with designers and engineers of other disciplines
  • Attend design team meetings and present design outcomes

Is this role right for you?

Although you could be straight from university, ideally you may have gained experience in a lighting, architectural and/or engineering consultancy practice.

Qualifications, attributes and skills

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree (2:1 or above) in lighting, architecture, engineering, product design or interior design or other relevant subject
  • A 2.1 or above in relevant degree modules such as architecture, art, design, maths, science, engineering and technology related subjects would be advantageous
  • Familiarity with 3D modelling software is desirable
  • Some knowledge of lighting software would be advantageous, including daylight analysis software
  • Some experience and ability in coding, software and digital skills would be advantageous

Portfolio

In order for your application to be considered for this role, please upload evidence of work, for example your sample portfolio or website link. The document must be in PDF format and no larger than 20MB. Please use image compression and vector drawings where possible to keep the file size down without sacrificing quality. To upload your sample portfolio please add it within the \’supporting documents\’ section of your application.

We’re Looking For

  • Changemakers: A passion for sustainable development and creating a better world is key.
  • Innovative minds: We’re looking for critical thinkers who embrace new ideas and challenge the status quo.
  • Growth seekers: You have a growth mindset, always eager to learn and explore new ways of working.
  • Adaptable adventurers: You’re ready to take on any challenge that comes your way.
  • You should be able to start this opportunity in September 2026.

Advert closing date: 15th November 2025. Please note, in the event of high applicant volume, this role may be closed ahead of the advertised closing date. Early application is recommended.
