Opportunity

On this Summer Internship you will work alongside skilled professionals and from day one you will be working on real life meaningful projects – adding value to clients, while exploring challenges with curiosity and creativity. You’ll learn from others and begin creating your professional network ready for when you graduate. There are regular learning sessions with our leadership team, opportunities for site visits to local projects and all kinds of social events that will support your learning and development.

As a member of the rail civils team, you will assist with design tasks at feasibility, concept or detailed design stages. As a team we work on a wide range of projects providing design solutions for different elements of rail infrastructure including major and minor stations, lineside equipment, retaining structures, bridges and electrification design. Some of the projects we have worked on are currently in construction, and there may be opportunities for site visits (location dependent).

Summary of skills

  • Structural analysis – building analysis models, hand calculations, and use of other digital tools.
  • Use and appreciation of design standards, including Eurocodes, Network Rail standards & Rail Industry Standards (among others).
  • Drawing & 3D model production – using a range of CAD software to produce sketches, drawings & models.
  • Multidisciplinary coordination & collaboration – working with other disciplines such as geotechnics, highways, bridges & others to deliver coordinated designs.

You’ll help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients. While you’ll have a great deal of responsibility from day one, we’ll give you the chance to take on more as you progress and broaden your skills. Our aim is to welcome as many students back into our other programmes – whether another internship or a potential graduate position. This placement is the stepping-stone to your future.

Qualifications

  • Studying an MEng or BEng in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • On track to achieve a 2.1 or above, as proven through the modules you have completed to date.
  • Demonstrate strong motivation and passion for a career in the rail industry.
