Senior Track Engineer in Glasgow

As we continue to expand our presence in Scotland, we are seeking a Senior Track Engineer to help strengthen our Permanent Way capability and support the delivery of complex rail projects across our UK portfolio.

This is an opportunity to take a leading role in the growth and development of our Scotland Permanent Way Design team. You will combine strong technical judgement with collaborative leadership, helping us deliver multidisciplinary rail projects and bids that achieve safe, technically excellent and meaningful outcomes for our clients and the communities they serve. You will determine track design requirements from client briefs, make sound engineering decisions and develop effective design solutions. You will provide and assure technical design input across rail projects, coordinate interfaces with other disciplines and external parties, and ensure client and project requirements are clearly understood.

As a senior member of the team, you will lead design production and delivery for medium and large projects, including checking drawings, calculations, reports and other track design deliverables. Experience acting as a Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) on Network Rail projects would be a strong advantage. You will also manage the identification, elimination and mitigation of design risk within the discipline. This includes supporting Safe by Design, producing focused CDM designer’s risk assessments and contributing to the Common Safety Method process. You will share knowledge, good practice and innovation across the wider North and UK rail teams. A key part of the role will be leading and developing people. You will manage and mentor colleagues in Scotland, including apprentices, graduates and technicians, and support their progression towards professional qualifications. You will work closely with the wider North team, with a presence in Manchester and York, and collaborate with technical leads and staff managers across the UK.

Our multidisciplinary portfolio includes Haymarket Depot, Transpennine Route Upgrade West of Leeds, Northern Powerhouse Rail, Metro 2 Washington and Lisburn–Antrim.

We are looking for people who:

• Have an engineering degree or equivalent qualification, with Chartered status or progress towards professional certification or membership.
• Bring substantial experience producing and checking Permanent Way feasibility, scheme and detailed designs, including reports, layouts and calculations for station throats, switches and crossings renewals, plain line renewals and infrastructure gauging.
• Can lead collaborative teams, coordinate multidisciplinary design interfaces and build strong working relationships with clients, technical leads and delivery partners, while mentoring and developing others.
• Have proficiency in relevant industry tools, including Bentley RailTrack, OpenRail, ProjectWise, ClearRoute 2, Track-Ex, SD Calculator and Bentley MicroStation within Common Data Environments.
• Understand relevant legislation, standards and assurance processes, including CDM, CSM, Network Rail Company Standards, RSSB Railway Industry Standards and National Technical Specification Notices.
• Experience acting as a CRE on Network Rail projects is desirable and will help you make an early impact, but we welcome applications from candidates whose broader leadership and Permanent Way experience strongly aligns with the role.
