The Opportunity: Arup’s expertise in the structure and behaviour of ground conditions helps us to find solutions for our clients in built and natural environments. Our team are leaders in ground engineering, working on a diverse range of UK and worldwide projects from building design to infrastructure for water, energy, nuclear, rail, highways, and aviation. Wherever difficult ground conditions, sensitive environments, stringent safety critical requirements or ambitious projects present geotechnical and geological challenges, we provide suitably robust advanced solutions. We are looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our team working from either of our Birmingham or Nottingham city centre offices. You will have the opportunity to push boundaries, develop new skills, and work on some of the current high-profile projects, from major urban developments and infrastructure improvements to projects that deliver our energy transition, enhance the natural environment, or provide resilience to the effects of climate change.
Responsibilities:
- Interpret and characterise the ground and develop and supervise ground investigations.
- Undertake geotechnical analysis to develop solutions to complex geotechnical challenges.
- Design geotechnical works and provide construction support for both building and infrastructure projects, including shallow and deep foundations, gravity/embedded retaining walls, ground improvement, underground structures, and earthworks, and prepare geotechnical design reports and specifications.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and project managers to ensure successful project delivery.
- Write reports for internal and external recipients. Present technical material (traditional and innovative methods) to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Understand trends and best practices in the geotechnical industry. Develop new or existing tools to support analyses and design.
Qualifications:
- A degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering. A post-graduate qualification in Geotechnical Engineering, Soil Mechanics, or equivalent is an advantage.
- Are working towards Chartered status of a professional engineering organisation.
- A background working as a geotechnical engineer, with an understanding and experience of geotechnical analysis and design of foundations, retaining structures, slope stability measures, and earthworks. An interest in geo-seismic design is desirable.
- Good planning, organisational, and time management skills.
- Experience in and enthusiasm for digital technologies applicable to geotechnical engineering is desirable, for example, the use of finite element software, GIS, programming (especially in python), and data (management, processing, and visualisation).
- Strong communication skills, including report writing and presentations. Enquiring minds and a desire to learn and progress their career.
