In the UK we deliver concept through to detail design for a wide range of clients including established asset owners and new market entrants (interconnectors, private wire schemes etc). As an example, Arup recently formed a joint venture with AECOM to serve as the design and consenting service partner for the UK National Grid’s Great Grid Partnership. Over a period of 8–12 years, Arup will help deliver key aspects of the transmission grid transformation, ensuring a resilient, low‑carbon energy network for the future. This is the UK’s major grid modernisation programme, set to deliver five times more electricity infrastructure than has been built in the past three decades.

The Opportunity

We are seeking Senior Engineering OHL candidates with proven experience within transmission and distribution; typically including but not limited to working knowledge of routing and tower for design line work coupled with an expanded CAD skillset. We are open to candidates based anywhere in the UK. The successful candidates will possess a background in EHV OHL design (33kV - 525kV) supporting construction, procurement and consultancy on a variety of projects. In turn we will guide your professional development and recognition within the sector.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and check feasibility studies, outline and detailed design technical reports and other written documents.
  • Design and check detail allocation and construction design drawings.
  • Produce design concepts, drawings, specifications and other technical documents.
  • Manage teams of engineers and external suppliers.
  • Deliver work to programme, budget and specification.

Qualifications

  • Senior Engineering OHL experience in transmission and distribution.
  • Proficient in routing and tower design for overhead lines.
  • Strong CAD skills and familiarity with design line work.
  • Experience with EHV OHL design (33kV–525kV).
  • Knowledge of design powerline structural foundations (piled, pad and rock‑anchor).
  • Proficiency in sag and tension calculations, catenary system design, line profiling, gantry analysis, tower setting levels, environmental loads, insulator set design, overhead line wire clearance, route plans, material quantification and short circuit study.
  • Professional qualification or expected to obtain within 12 months.
