Joining Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world. We’re looking for Fire Engineers to join our UK team and help deliver a growing portfolio of high-impact, meaningful projects. Our work spans the iconic and the unconventional, from restoring Manchester’s Grade-I listed Town Hall to transforming the British Museum in one of the world’s largest cultural renovations. We also led fire safety on the UK’s first mass timber light industrial building and a RIBA London Award winner.
At Arup, we go beyond compliance. We conduct cutting-edge fire safety research, develop in-house digital tools, and collaborate with academia and industry to tackle emerging hazards and improve safety equity, especially for the most vulnerable. Join us and you’ll be part of a diverse, innovative team that’s been leading fire safety engineering for over 50 years.
The Opportunity: At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
You will complement our fire safety team and help deliver fire safety engineering services for our clients. As part of a 400+ strong fire safety skills network across 20 offices, your role will involve interactive and collaborative working with fire safety colleagues and multidisciplinary teams at Arup. We appreciate that everyone’s circumstances are different and it’s not always easy to commit to standard working hours. Our innovative hybrid approach to working gives all our members greater flexibility in deciding how and where they work.
Is this role right for you? We strive for excellence and invest in the development of our people. You will have access to a wide range of training and development opportunities, including CPD events. Once you have demonstrated a suitable skill in fire safety engineering and delivery of projects, there will be opportunities to advance your career.
We are looking for someone who is technically well versed in fire safety legislation and guidance, and first principles design approaches, who can deliver evidence-based fire safety solutions on time and on budget. A history of gaining consent for prescriptive and performance-based design solutions from approving authorities is also important. As a senior member of the fire safety practice, you will have strong meeting and negotiating skills and a background of managing project teams and finances. You will be a team player, generously sharing your knowledge and experience with others, and open to feedback and curious to learn and grow yourself.
You will have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant degree subject (fire engineering, other types of engineering, or architecture related degree) and will preferably be a Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution such as the Institution of Fire Engineers or be close to gaining Chartered Engineer status.
Key experience may include:
- Experience in a fire engineering consultancy or similar environment.
- Extensive background in delivering evidence-based fire safety solutions for UK based projects, in a range of different sectors.
- Knowledge of applicable legislation and guidance used in the UK, and awareness of the new regulatory regime.
- Experienced in leading client and stakeholder meetings, and able to explain technically complicated fire safety matters to lay persons to enable informed decision making.
- Familiar with RIBA Plan of Work or other design frameworks (e.g. GRIP).
What we offer you: At Arup, we care about each member’s success, so we can grow together. Guided by our values, we provide an attractive total reward package that recognises the contribution of each of our members to our shared success. As well as competitive, fair and equitable pay, we offer a career in which all of our members can belong, grow and thrive – through benefits that support health and wellbeing, a wide range of learning opportunities and many possibilities to have an impact through the work they do.
We are owned in trust on behalf of our members, giving us the freedom, with personal responsibility, to set our own direction and choose work that aligns with our purpose and adds to Arup’s legacy. Our members collaborate on ambitious projects to deliver remarkable outcomes for our clients and communities. Profit Share is a key part of our reward, enabling members to share in the results of our collective efforts. We also provide Private medical insurance, Life assurance, Accident insurance and Income protection cover.
