The Opportunity

Our Economics and Casemaking practice sits within our Cities, Planning and Design (CPD) team and is at the forefront in thinking about the future of our places. Our Economics & Casemaking team provides strategy, planning, and economic consultancy services to a range of high-profile clients. We work across several sub-areas including regeneration, economic development, skills and innovation, energy, environment, and transport, offering a variety of services including:

Vision, strategy and economic storytelling documents for regeneration, developmentand infrastructure proposals.

Building the case for investment,authoring HMTGreen Book compliant business cases.

Strategic advice on inclusive economic growth and innovation.

Socio-economic baselining, context setting, data and trend analysis and research.

Economic appraisal,cost-benefit analysisand modelling.

Impact assessments, including environmental, socio-economic,equalities,and health for planning and policy.

Evaluation and econometrics.

Project deliveryadvice and management support.

Our Economics & Casemaking team in the North comprises 10 members, as part of a national practice of over 50 members. Within the North, we are looking for a new member to join our Manchester office and support the team. We are looking for someone who is passionate about urban regeneration, housing, transport, and the integration of these factors in shaping the places around us. Ideally, we are looking for someone with c. 12 – 36 months of experience in the built environment, preferably with some experience in consultancy.

Working as part of a team, you will help manage client relationships with public sector agencies, city governments, international organisations, property developers, infrastructure operators and other organisations. This will involve providing advice to cities and regions in the UK and beyond on business case development for infrastructure / regeneration projects, strategies for inclusive and sustainable growth and providing strategy and management support.

Whilst you will be part of this Economics & Casemaking team in the North, you will work with colleagues across the business. Our work is structured around projects, with most of our work carried out through temporary project teams that are bespoke to each project. As such, we often work in collaboration with a range of technical specialists including urban planners, transport planners / modellers, and sustainability experts.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for the following qualifications, attributes, and skills:

An undergraduate (achieved/predicted minimum of 2:1, or equivalent) or Master’s degree in economics, geography, real estate, public policy, business, or another built environment discipline such as town planning.

Storytelling and written communication: You are able to: write clear and concise reports; prepare high-quality visual and written documents, presentations, and outputs that tell a compelling story; engageand influenceaudiences;and relay information in a concise and logically structuredmanner.

Verbal communication: You are able to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues, and feel confident in delivering presentations, leading meetings and workshops.

Numerical proficiency, research and analytical skills: You can analyse data, undertake qualitative research and synthesise information.

Team working: you are an enthusiastic person, passionate about collaboration and bringing people together around a shared idea.

Strategic and integrated thinking: You are able to interpret the needs of a wide range of stakeholders, take a strategic view on complex issues and deliver integrated solutions (i.e. recognising when to bring various types of technical expertise to the table).

You are a self-starter with good organisational and time-management skills.

You have a clear interest in working on projects related to the built environment, specifically but not limited to urban regeneration, housing, transport and net zero. You also have an interest in current affairs relating to the sector.

Useful but not required:

Statistical analysis and data visualisation, and using software such as GIS and PowerBI software

Economic modelling experience e.g. Cost Benefit Analysis

Better Business Case Training.
