This job is with ARUP, an inclusive employer. Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

At Arup, structural engineering is at the heart of what we do. Our engineers design safe, efficient, and sustainable structures, combining technical expertise with innovative thinking. Through collaboration and advanced digital tools, we solve complex engineering challenges and develop resilient, high-performing structural solutions that shape the future of engineering.

The Opportunity: Scotland's infrastructure is undergoing significant transformation to support decarbonisation, energy security, economic growth and community resilience. We are seeking talented Civil Structural Engineers at a range of grades (including Engineer, Senior Engineer and Principal Engineer) to join our growing Glasgow based Energy Water & Resources team to support the delivery of projects that will make this possible.

Our current portfolio covers a wide range of multi-disciplinary projects in the Renewable Energy, Water and Maritime sectors. Typical examples include pumped storage hydro developments, HV transmission infrastructure, major wastewater utility renewals and ports and harbour regeneration projects, alongside a proven track record in urban realm redevelopment and wider civil engineering infrastructure. These projects range from local interventions to nationally significant programmes, providing opportunities to work on schemes that create lasting value for communities, industry and the environment.

You will have the opportunity to work across the full project lifecycle, from initial concept stage and feasibility studies through to detailed design, project delivery and construction support. Whether supporting project development in its early stages or helping to solve complex challenges during delivery, you will play a key role in shaping practical and sustainable engineering solutions.

Your responsibilities will vary depending on your seniority, with increasing responsibility at Senior and Principal Engineer levels for leading, influencing and supporting project delivery and management activities:

  • Deliver project work across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and concept design through to detailed design, construction support, retrofit and remediation.
  • Undertake complex structural analysis and design across a range of situations, including aggressive environments and non-standard loads.
  • Produce and review structural designs, calculations, reports, drawings and digital models.
  • Coordinate with civil, MEP and geotechnical disciplines to deliver integrated project solutions.
  • Lead technical delivery, maintaining high standards of quality, safety, innovation and engineering excellence.
  • Collaborate with clients, stakeholders and colleagues to understand and respond to project requirements.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, providing technical guidance, coaching and day-to-day development.

What we are looking for: We are interested in candidates who can demonstrate a combination of the following skills:

  • BEng, MEng or MSc level degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered or working towards Chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE) or equivalent.
  • Technical expertise in structural analysis and design, with proficiency in engineering software such as GSA, AdSec, or equivalent finite element modelling and design tools.
  • Experience in the design and specification of reinforced concrete structures.
  • Experience in the delivery of structural designs for Civil Engineering infrastructure in Water, Maritime, Renewable Energy or related fields.
  • Experience engaging with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Experience applying Eurocodes and relevant industry standards.
  • Strong communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and manage multidisciplinary interfaces.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outputs to programme requirements.

The following skills and experience would be advantageous:

  • Experience of supervising and mentoring more junior staff on a day-to-day basis.
  • Experience of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of soil-structure interaction.
  • Experience of fatigue assessment of dynamically loaded structures.
  • Design & Project management experience on small projects or discrete packages of larger multidisciplinary projects.
  • Experience reviewing engineering drawings and interrogating 3D models using industry-standard software such as Civil 3D, Revit or equivalent.
  • Experience in contributing to project commercial performance by monitoring progress, programme and budget requirements.
  • Experience of supporting with the programming and allocation of team resources and management of deliverables across multiple disciplines.
  • Experience in the design and specification of structural steel.
