This job is with ARUP, an inclusive employer. Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our well-established multidisciplinary rail team brings together specialists from across civil engineering, rail systems and infrastructure design. Working collaboratively, we deliver high-quality solutions that support the development and improvement of railway infrastructure for our clients and the communities they serve.

We are looking for a Civil Engineer with experience in transport infrastructure to join our multidisciplinary rail team in Birmingham. You may already have experience in the rail sector, or you may bring transferable civil engineering expertise from another infrastructure environment.

In this role, you will contribute your civil engineering design skills and technical knowledge to a varied portfolio of railway projects. Working as part of integrated project teams, you will help deliver high-quality technical outputs to agreed standards and timescales. Your work may include:

  • Preparing preliminary and detailed engineering layouts
  • Undertaking design calculations and technical analysis
  • Developing and assessing design options
  • Producing technical studies, reports and project documentation

You will also collaborate with colleagues across a range of disciplines to help create coordinated and practical design solutions. This is an opportunity to further develop your civil engineering, rail design and design management capabilities. Supported by experienced colleagues across our rail and infrastructure teams, you will build on your existing design experience, take increasing ownership of technical tasks and contribute to the continued development of Arup's rail capability.

We are looking for people who:

  • Hold a bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering, or have equivalent relevant experience, with a sound foundation in civil engineering design and the ability to apply engineering judgement to project work.
  • Understand civil engineering design principles, standards, construction methods and relevant components, with an awareness of the CDM Regulations and their application to design.
  • Can prepare clear and concise technical reports, calculations and project documentation, with a strong commitment to quality, accuracy and efficient delivery.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, clients and specialists across technical disciplines, while managing their own tasks with appropriate support and contributing to the development of less experienced colleagues.
  • Bring relevant transport infrastructure experience and an interest in developing their knowledge of railway systems, design coordination and the interfaces between civil engineering, railway assets and operational requirements.

It would be beneficial if you are working towards professional qualification with the ICE or another relevant professional body. Experience in drainage design, design coordination, project controls, change management or financial forecasting would also be welcomed. We would additionally value an interest in digital tools, automation, coding or AI and how these can improve design quality, efficiency and collaboration.

We recognise that candidates may not meet every criterion listed. If you are interested in the role and believe your skills and experience could be a good fit, we encourage you to apply.

At Arup, we care about each member's success, so we can grow together. Guided by our values, we provide an attractive total reward package that recognises the contribution of each of our members to our shared success.
