Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world. Our process chemical and process engineering team comprises specialist chemical engineers, scientists and industrial experts who shape everything from conceptual design ideas through pre-FEED and FEED to completed turnkey facilities. We support projects at all stages of delivery, ensuring safe, regulatory compliant solutions. We focus on design development, process optimisation, debottlenecking and control of chemical, physical, and biological processes, from hydrogen production to carbon capture and transformation through to water and wastewater treatment.

We are looking for candidates with a background in Process engineering design on multi-disciplinary projects within the municipal and industrial water sectors. With our depth and breadth of skills, our team is currently involved in many exciting projects across the Energy, Water and Resources sectors. Whilst the team is based across the North of England, much of our work involves supporting projects internationally, integrating with teams in our offices across the globe.

The Opportunity

As a senior engineer you are likely to have the ability to work across the project life cycle from developing concept designs to outline and detailed designs, and skills working in or directing process engineering teams to ensure production of deliverables to established timelines and within budget.

What You’ll Do

  • You will co-ordinate the work of others and liaise with engineers of other disciplines, imparting your knowledge and experiences.
  • You will be working in highly regulated sectors, within a gated design and project delivery process.
  • You will be involved in the development of mass and energy balances, process data sheets, control philosophies, and commissioning plans.
  • You will also be involved in report writing and the development of fee proposals and feasibility studies of plant operating and capital costs.
  • We would expect you to have a practical comprehension of how your designs will be implemented, and of digital approaches to solve our problems, including the relevant current analysis and design software.
  • We operate an enviable graduate training scheme, which is accredited by the IChemE, and as a senior engineer you will be expected to join the mentoring programme and help to shape our future pipeline of process engineers.

We are looking for candidates with experience of a variety of technologies needed for the treatment of potable water, wastewater and biosolids processing. The successful candidates are likely to have design experience of the following: fixed and suspended growth systems, anaerobic treatment of biosolids and high-strength effluent, biogas handling and upgrading, membrane separation, solids filtration, disinfection, oxygenation, thermal hydrolysis, nutrient removal processes, chemical storage and dosing systems, along with some experience of HazOp, DSEAR, COMAH, SIL determination, flammable gas handling and compression.

What We’re Looking For

  • Degree qualified in chemical engineering or similar.
  • Familiarity with wastewater and/or drinking water treatment processes, including innovative technologies and approaches.
  • Understanding of the municipal UK treatment landscape.
  • Familiarity with UK water industry regulations and compliance standards.
  • Use of Biowin/GPS-X modelling software.
  • Experience acting as the process designer in the HAZOP teams.
  • Chairing HazOp studies.
  • Resolution of technical matters and ideally experience of working in highly regulated sectors.
  • Development of fee proposals, creation of PID’s, plant layouts, GA and creation of energy and mass balances.
  • Development of feasibility studies and plant operating and capital costs.
  • Experience of digital approaches to solve our problems including the relevant current analysis and design software.
