The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Rail Telecoms Engineer with design experience of Station Information and Surveillance Systems (SISS) and Operational Telecoms to join our Technology Consulting team, which is based within the Arup Digital Services Portfolio. You will be involved in a range of projects from consultancy and advisory, enhancements schemes, larger resignalling schemes, new build and station upgrades through to greenfield new route railways. Your time may be used to deliver a single large project or split between multiple smaller opportunities. You will provide telecoms advice and design content to external clients and our multidisciplinary Rail design team colleagues typically for GRIP Stages 2 – 8/PACE Stages ES2-8 and RIBA stages 2 through to 6. Your work will be of a high standard motivated by a desire to deliver outstanding and innovative technical designs and advice to our clients. You will be expected to collaborate with others and to proactively engage in each project and form lasting relationships with clients and colleagues.

The Role Will Involve

  • Comprehension, capturing and developing client requirements.
  • System design development (from concept through to construction).
  • Overseeing and supervising the tasks of more junior staff on projects.
  • Checking others work in accordance with quality management systems.
  • On-site monitoring and witness testing of rail telecoms installations.
  • Contributing to scope documents and fee proposals for new infrastructure projects.

Projects will be in the UK and abroad. The candidate will be willing to travel when needed; however, this role does not require extended periods away.

Is this role right for you? We’re Looking For a Candidate Who Can Demonstrate

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of Station Information and Surveillance Systems (SISS).
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of Operational Communications.
  • Proficient experience of telecommunications systems design with an emphasis on telecommunication networks and equipment.
  • Expertise in system design and integration within the built environment, interfacing with manufacturers and validating system installation, commissioning, and testing in a construction advice role.
  • Thorough working knowledge of Railway Standards.
  • An ability to write clear and concise reports and specifications in both technical and non-technical language, including preparation of easy-to-understand system diagrams and schematics.
  • A working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microstation, Revit and Navisworks or similar, for the production and review of 3D design models.
  • Other complementary skills including Wireless LAN technology, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), Radio over IP, Access Control Systems (ACS), Video Surveillance Systems (VSS), Smart Buildings/IoT, IP telephony or Unified Communications would also be beneficial.
  • Relevant technical qualifications in Engineering, Telecommunications, Electronics, Systems Engineering or equivalent.
  • A professional qualification (e.g. CEng/IEng) or working towards this and membership of relevant professional body (e.g. IET/IRSE).

Your technical skills and knowledge will be comprehensive and should allow you to comfortably advise our clients and develop design strategies with our internal teams. You will be capable of working on several projects at the same time and have the ability to prioritise activities for yourself and others.
